Chapter 6 - The Rebuilding

By the spring of 2027, the coastal town of Bar Harbor had embraced Evelyn Mercer as one of its own.
Using her inheritance and the funds from the shipping logistics division, Evelyn established the Arthur Mercer Architectural Foundation—a non-profit organization dedicated to restoring historic coastal buildings and providing low-income housing for local fishing families across New England.
Her first major project was the full restoration of the historic Bar Harbor Maritime Library—a nineteenth-century granite building overlooking the harbor that had been abandoned for twenty years.
On a sunny morning in May, Evelyn stood inside the high, vaulted main hall of the library, wearing a hard hat over her dark waves, holding a roll of architectural blueprints.
Nathan stood beside her, reviewing the timber beam supports with the chief contractor.
“The original oak trusses are completely sound, Evelyn,” Nathan said, pointing up at the soaring ceiling. “Your father’s original load calculations were brilliant.”
Evelyn looked up at the sunlight streaming through the arched stained-glass windows, her heart filled with a deep, profound joy.
“He loved this kind of work,” Evelyn smiled softly. “He used to say that a good building isn't defined by how high it reaches into the sky, but by how deep its roots go into the earth.”
Nathan set his clipboard down on a work table. He walked over to her, stepping close, his gray eyes shining with an affection that had grown deeper with every passing month.
“Speaking of deep roots,” Nathan murmured gently, taking the blueprints from her hands and setting them aside. “The board of directors for the maritime trust approved our partnership proposal this morning.”
Evelyn looked at him, her eyes bright. “Really?”
“Really,” Nathan smiled, taking both of her hands in his. “Which means you and I are officially partners on every major restoration project in Maine for the next ten years.”
Evelyn laughed—a bright, beautiful sound that echoed through the vaulted granite hall.
“Partners,” she teased softly, looking into his eyes. “Are you sure you can handle working with a woman who alphabetizes soup cans for fun?”
Nathan’s smile softened into something deeply intimate, reverent, and intense. He reached out, his hand cupping her cheek, his thumb tracing her cheekbone with infinite care.

“I’d follow you into any room in the world, Evelyn,” Nathan whispered. “And I’d make sure every camera in the city knew who you were.”
Evelyn leaned into his touch, closing her eyes as a warm, sweet shiver ran down her spine.
