Chapter 6 - A Moment in the Garden

While the city roared with political tension outside, the atmosphere inside the Marchetti estate was quiet, warm, and peaceful.

For the first time in her life, Evelyn felt what it was like to exist without fear.

She spent her mornings working on architectural design sketches in the mansion’s sunlit glass conservatory—a passion she had abandoned five years ago when her father fell ill.

Vincent had personally ordered professional drafting tables, high-end drawing supplies, and rare architectural books delivered to her room.

One cold Tuesday afternoon, as snow began to fall softly over the garden, Vincent walked into the conservatory, carrying two mugs of steaming hot chocolate.

"You're making progress," Vincent said softly, setting a mug on her drawing table and looking down at her sketch of a proposed community center for South Philadelphia.

Evelyn smiled—a genuine, radiant smile that brought warmth to her dark eyes. "I used to dream of designing affordable housing before I had to drop out of college. I forgot how much I loved it."

Vincent watched her face, his heart softening in a way he hadn't experienced in twenty years.

"You have a natural gift for balance, Evelyn," Vincent said gently. "You see how structures protect people, not just how they look from the outside."

Evelyn turned her chair to face him. She looked at his sharp, handsome face, noticing the soft, tender expression he reserved only for her.

"Vincent," she spoke his first name softly, a gesture she had rarely used. "Why are you doing all of this for me? The security, the legal team, the drawing supplies... you've spent hundreds of thousands of dollars protecting a woman you barely knew."

Vincent stepped closer, resting his hand gently against the edge of her drafting table.

"When I first saw you in that ballroom," Vincent said quietly, his dark eyes locking onto hers with unyielding sincerity, "I thought I was just stopping another bully. But over the last three weeks... watching you laugh, watching you design, watching you heal..."

He paused, his voice dropping into a low, breathless whisper.

"I realized that I wasn't saving you, Evelyn. You were bringing light into a house that has been dark for forty years."

Evelyn felt her breath catch. Her heart fluttered sharply against her ribs. She didn't feel fear. She felt an intense, overwhelming warmth that spread through her chest.

Slowly, without breaking eye contact, Evelyn reached out and laid her hand gently over Vincent’s strong, scarred fingers resting on the table.

Vincent didn't pull away. He turned his hand over, intertwining his fingers with hers, holding her with an absolute, reverent tenderness.

"I'm not afraid of you, Vincent," Evelyn whispered softly.

"I never want you to be," Vincent replied gently, leaning down to press a soft, respectful kiss against the top of her head.

The moment of peace was shattered by the sudden, frantic ringing of Vincent’s encrypted cell phone.

Vincent stepped back, pulling the phone from his jacket pocket. "Speak, Leo."

"Boss," Leo’s voice sounded urgent over the speaker. "We just intercepted a communication from Vance’s team. Graham Whitmore hired Marcus Kane. They’ve placed two surveillance vans on the North Gate. They're planning an ambush."

May you like

Vincent’s face instantly transformed into a wall of dark, lethal iron. The gentle warmth vanished, replaced by the terrifying aura of the Marchetti Don.

"Gather the team," Vincent commanded coldly. "It’s time to end Graham Whitmore’s campaign once and for all."
