Chapter 5 - The Subterranean War

For the next three weeks, a quiet, invisible war raged beneath the surface of Philadelphia’s political landscape.

Graham Whitmore’s campaign began to suffer a series of strange, catastrophic setbacks.

First, his primary campaign funding account at First Pennsylvania Bank was suddenly frozen due to an "unexplained compliance anomaly" flagged by an offshore audit team—an audit team quietly owned by a Marchetti subsidiary.

Second, the main contractor for his flagship waterfront development project pulled thirty heavy construction crews off the site, citing unpaid safety bonds.

Inside his campaign headquarters on Market Street, Graham was losing his mind.

He slammed his telephone receiver down onto his mahogany desk so hard the plastic cracked.

"Where is she?!" Graham screamed at his private investigator, a former police detective named Roy Vance. "You've had three weeks! How can a former waitress vanish in a city of two million people?!"

Roy Vance adjusted his leather jacket, sweating nervously. "Graham... she didn't vanish into thin air. She’s at the Marchetti estate in Rittenhouse Square."

Graham froze, his face draining of color. "Marchetti? Vincent Marchetti?"

"Yeah," Vance swallowed hard. "My guys spotted her walking in his private garden two days ago. She’s living in his main house, Graham. She has two armed Marchetti guards with her whenever she steps onto the terrace."

Graham sat down heavily in his leather chair, a cold sweat breaking out across his forehead. "Why the hell is Vincent Marchetti protecting my fiancée?"

"Word on the street is Marchetti bought out your Cayman loan notes last Thursday," Vance added quietly. "He owns your six-million-dollar debt now, Graham. If you miss the payment deadline on December first, Marchetti can legally seize all your development assets."

Graham’s hands shook as he gripped his desk. "He’s trying to destroy me."

"He’s succeeding," Vance corrected bluntly. "What do you want to do?"

Graham’s eyes narrowed into a desperate, feral glare. "Call Marcus Kane."

Vance gasped, looking horrified. "Kane? The hitman from North Philly? Graham, if you touch a guest of Vincent Marchetti, he won't just ruin your business. He’ll put you in a barrel in the Delaware River!"

"I don't want him to touch Marchetti!" Graham yelled, leaning over his desk, his voice wild with unhinged rage. "I want him to snatch Evelyn when she steps out of that house! If I get her back on stage in front of the press confessing that Marchetti kidnapped her, the federal authorities will indict Marchetti for extortion, and my loan notes will be frozen in court!"

"It's too dangerous, Graham—"

"Do it!" Graham screamed. "Or I’ll tell the district attorney who really paid for your wife’s cancer treatments three years ago!"

Vance turned pale, bowed his head, and exited the room in silence.
