Chapter 7 - The Trial of the Century

Two weeks later, the Federal District Court in Lower Manhattan was under siege by global media.

The trial of Vanessa Crowe had become the highest-profile corporate criminal case in American history. Hundreds of news vans lined the streets, while thousands of spectators gathered outside holding signs supporting Claire Bennett.

Inside the crowded courtroom, the atmosphere was suffocatingly tense.

Vanessa Crowe sat at the defense table, wearing a dark gray prison jumpsuit, her hair unstyled, her once-flawless appearance completely shattered. Her eyes were sunken, darting around the courtroom with venomous desperation.

On the other side of the aisle sat Dominic Hale. He was dressed in a tailored black suit, his presence commanding absolute silence in the gallery. Beside him sat Claire.

“Call your next witness,” Judge Henderson ordered.

“The prosecution calls Claire Bennett,” the prosecutor announced.

A murmur ran through the courtroom. Dominic turned to Claire, gently placing his hand on her back. “I am right here,” he whispered. “I won't let anyone hurt you.”

Claire nodded, stood up, and walked with absolute grace toward the witness stand. She swore the oath, her voice steady and clear.

For the next two hours, the prosecutor led Claire through the agonizing events of seven years ago.

Claire described the morning in the hospital room—the fear, the armed men, the fake bank documents, and Vanessa’s cold, cruel threat against her brother’s life.

“And why did you not inform Mr. Hale about the pregnancy at that time, Ms. Bennett?” the prosecutor asked gently.

Claire turned her head and looked directly at Vanessa, who glared back with pure hatred.

“Because Ms. Crowe showed me footage of armed men tracking my family,” Claire said, her voice ringing clear through the microphone. “She told me that if I said a single word to Dominic, he would order my family erased. I knew Dominic was powerful, and at that time, I believed he hated me enough to do it. I sacrificed my marriage, my reputation, and my happiness to keep my unborn children alive.”

Tears welled in the eyes of several jurors.

Vanessa’s lead defense attorney jumped up. “Objection, Your Honor! Unsubstantiated emotional testimony!”

“Overruled!” Judge Henderson snapped.

Then came the cross-examination. Vanessa’s high-priced defense attorney strutted toward the witness stand like a vulture.

“Ms. Bennett,” the attorney sneered. “Isn't it true that you suddenly resurfaced seven years later at a high-profile Manhattan charity gala specifically because you knew Mr. Hale would be there? Isn't it true this was a calculated plot to re-enter his wealthy orbit?”

Before Claire could answer, a commotion erupted at the back of the courtroom.

The double doors burst open. Harrison, Dominic’s chief investigator, marched down the aisle holding a sealed evidence box, accompanied by two federal postal inspectors.

“Your Honor!” the prosecutor stood up immediately. “An urgent piece of evidence has just been uncovered by federal authorities executing a search warrant on Ms. Crowe’s private safety deposit box in Switzerland!”

Vanessa’s defense attorney went pale. “Your Honor, this is highly irregular!”

“I will allow it,” Judge Henderson declared.

The prosecutor opened the box and extracted an old, dusty leather-bound journal and an audio recorder.

“Your Honor,” the prosecutor stated loudly. “This is Vanessa Crowe’s personal encrypted diary and private audio recording device, recovered from her Zurich vault. On the audio file dated October 14th seven years ago, Ms. Crowe explicitly recorded her conversation with the hitman she hired to frame Claire Bennett, detailing step-by-step how she planned to steal the Hale family fortune.”

The prosecutor pressed play on a digital speaker.

Vanessa’s sharp, haughty voice filled the courtroom:

“...Claire is pregnant with Dominic’s triplets. If he finds out, he will never divorce her. We need to stage the medical patent theft tonight. Once Dominic throws her out, I will handle the hospital room threat myself. By the time he realizes the truth, I’ll be running the board...”

The entire courtroom exploded into chaos.

Gavel slamming repeatedly could not drown out the gasps of the audience.

Vanessa suddenly lost all control. She stood up, knocking her heavy wooden chair backward, her face twisted into a mask of rage.

“You ruined everything!” Vanessa screamed at Claire, her fingers clawing at the air as federal marshals rushed to tackle her. “You were supposed to die in poverty! He was mine! The Hale empire was mine!”

Dominic instantly stepped in front of Claire, shielding her with his body as four marshals slammed Vanessa onto the floor, pinning her arms behind her back and hauling her out through the side door.

Judge Henderson slammed his gavel down one last time. “In light of this incontrovertible evidence, this court finds the defense utterly baseless. Vanessa Crowe will be held without bail pending immediate sentencing!”

As the courtroom erupted into cheers, Claire stood on the witness stand, her chest rising and falling.

It was over. The nightmare that had haunted her for seven long years was finally, completely dead.

Dominic walked up to the witness stand, extended his hand, and helped her down.

“You did it,” Dominic whispered, his gray eyes full of tears. “It’s over, Claire. You’re finally free.”

Claire looked at him, feeling the heavy iron weight that had crushed her spirit for seven years melt away completely into the bright afternoon sun streaming through the high courtroom windows.
