Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Ambush

By dawn, the storm had turned into a thick, blinding fog that hung low over the Connecticut hills. Inside Hale Manor, no one had slept.

Dominic sat in his massive wood-paneled study, surrounded by four top criminal defense attorneys and his chief investigator, Harrison. Whiteboards were covered in complex family trees, corporate shareholding diagrams, and timeline analysis of Vanessa’s financial empire.

The door opened, and Claire walked in. She had changed into a modest dark green blouse and black trousers provided by Mrs. Gable. Her hair was pulled back into a neat bun, exposing the sharp, beautiful angles of her face. She looked exhausted, but her eyes were clear and dangerous.

“She’s trying to take them, isn't she?” Claire said, walking directly to the center of the room.

The lawyers glanced at Dominic nervously.

“Vanessa filed an emergency petition with Judge Vance in Manhattan at 5:00 AM,” Dominic said, standing up from behind his heavy oak desk. “Vance is in her pocket. He signed a preliminary order demanding that you present the children at the Manhattan Family Court by 2:00 PM today for court-ordered DNA sampling and temporary protective custody.”

“Over my dead body,” Claire said without hesitation.

“That’s exactly what she’s counting on,” Harrison interjected, tapping a paper on the desk. “If you fail to appear, Judge Vance will issue an immediate federal arrest warrant for parental kidnapping. They will send federal marshals to this estate. Dominic can’t fire on federal agents without triggering a massive siege.”

Claire turned her fierce gaze onto Dominic. “You said you could protect us.”

“I can,” Dominic said, walking around the desk until he was standing right in front of her. “But we aren't going to play her game in family court. We’re going to hit her where she feels no pain: the annual shareholder meeting of Hale Enterprises at 10:00 AM today.”

Claire frowned. “What good does a shareholder meeting do?”

“Vanessa’s entire power base relies on the board of directors supporting her emergency motion to freeze my voting shares,” Dominic explained, his voice filled with tactical precision. “She claims you are an extortionist and the children are fake. The board believes her because they haven't seen the truth. If we walk into that boardroom together—you, me, and our children—and present an immediate, live DNA test conducted by the head of Mount Sinai Genetics, her entire narrative disintegrates in five seconds.”

“And what about the legal warrant?” Claire asked.

“My legal team has filed a jurisdictional counter-suit in the Southern District Federal Court,” Dominic’s lead attorney stated. “If we prove biological paternity publicly before 2:00 PM, Judge Vance’s family court order becomes legally void due to fraudulent filing.”

Claire looked down at her hands. She hated the high-society world of corporate sharks. It was the very world that had chewed her up and spit her out seven years ago. But she looked up at Dominic, seeing the absolute, unyielding conviction in his eyes.

“What do I need to do?” she asked.

“Put on the finest dress in this house,” Dominic said, his eyes darkening with an emotion he couldn't hide. “And stand by my side like you used to.”

At 9:45 AM, three dark SUVs pulled up to the rear entrance of the Hale Tower in Midtown Manhattan. Fifty private security guards formed a human wall, shielding Claire and the three children as they were whisked into the private executive elevator.

The children were dressed impeccably. Leo wore a dark blue blazer that matched his father’s, while Lily and Maya wore simple, elegant cream dresses. Though terrified by the flashbulbs of reporters outside the glass perimeter, they held Claire’s hands tightly, their faces set with remarkable bravery.

The elevator climbed smooth and fast to the 80th floor.

The heavy glass doors of the grand boardroom slid open.

Inside, twenty board members in tailored suits were seated around a thirty-foot conference table made of polished mahogany. At the head of the table sat Vanessa Crowe. She was mid-sentence, gesturing toward a large presentation screen displaying an emergency vote to strip Dominic of his CEO title.

“...and therefore, due to Mr. Hale’s psychological instability and susceptibility to this criminal syndicate—” Vanessa stopped mid-word.

The silence that fell over the room was absolute.

Dominic walked in first, his tall, imposing figure radiating lethal authority. Behind him walked Claire, her head held high, looking every inch a queen returning to her throne. And behind Claire came the three six-year-old children, walked in by Harrison.

Vanessa’s face turned an ashen, ghostly gray. The pen in her hand slipped, falling onto the glass table with a sharp clack.

“Dominic…” Vanessa stammered, quickly attempting to regain her composure, though her voice quivered. “What is the meaning of this intrusion? This is an executive board session! Security!”

“Security works for me, Vanessa,” Dominic said, his voice echoing off the floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking the Manhattan skyline. “And as the owner of fifty-one percent of Class-A voting shares, I am declaring this meeting in session.”

“You cannot vote!” Vanessa shrieked, standing up, her polished demeanor cracking. “You are under investigation! That woman is a criminal! She betrayed this company seven years ago!”

“Did she?” Dominic tapped his fingers on the table.

Dr. Aris Thorne, the world-renowned head of genetics at Mount Sinai Hospital, stepped into the room holding a sealed leather folder.

“Members of the board,” Dr. Thorne announced loudly. “At 6:00 AM this morning, under strict chain-of-custody protocols witnessed by federal officers, I personally conducted a rapid STR genetic marker analysis on Dominic Hale, Claire Bennett, and the three children present.”

Dr. Thorne opened the folder and placed three documents onto the central digital scanner. Instantly, massive screens around the boardroom displayed the genetic match graphs.

“The statistical probability that Dominic Hale is the biological father of Leo, Lily, and Maya Hale is 99.999%,” Dr. Thorne declared. “They are his legitimate, biological children.”

A collective gasp rippled through the room. Board members turned to look at Vanessa, their expressions instantly shifting from support to deep suspicion.

Vanessa’s breath came in ragged gasps. “It’s a lie! He paid you off! The technology can be manipulated!”

“The test was livestreamed to the Federal District Court three minutes ago, Vanessa,” Dominic said, stepping slowly down the length of the table toward her. “Which means your claim of fraudulent extortion is dead. And your petition in family court has just been dismissed with prejudice.”

Vanessa backed away from the head of the table, her hands trembling as she reached for her purse. “Dominic… please. I was only trying to protect you… I thought she was using you—”

“Save it,” Dominic coldness could freeze steel. “Harrison, bring in the second guest.”

The side door opened. Two federal agents stepped into the boardroom escorting a man in handcuffs.

It was Thomas Sterling—the former head of IT who had mysteriously resigned from Hale Holdings seven years ago, right after Claire was framed.

Vanessa’s eyes widened in sheer, unadulterated terror.

“Mr. Sterling has spent the last four hours speaking with the United States Attorney,” Dominic revealed softly. “He just handed over the original, unedited server logs from seven years ago. The logs showing that it was your private account, Vanessa, that uploaded the fake patent transfers to Claire’s computer. And he also gave us the bank transfer proving you paid him two million dollars to stay quiet in the Cayman Islands.”

Vanessa collapsed back into her leather chair, her pristine mask completely shattered.

“Vanessa Crowe,” an FBI agent stepped forward, pulling out a pair of steel handcuffs. “You are under arrest for corporate fraud, conspiracy to commit murder, and interstate wire fraud. You have the right to remain silent.”

As the cold steel snapped around Vanessa’s wrists, she looked up at Dominic, her eyes wild with madness. “You think she loves you, Dominic?! She hates you! She will never take you back! You destroyed her life yourself!”

Dominic didn't answer. He didn't even look at her as the agents dragged her screaming out of the boardroom.

Instead, Dominic turned around and looked across the long mahogany table at Claire.

She was standing strong, holding her children close. But as her eyes met his, Dominic saw no triumph in them.

Only the heavy, painful question that still remained: Now what?
