Chapter 6 - The Trial of Shadow and Steel

Though Vanessa Crowe was behind bars in a federal holding facility, her shadow still hung long and dangerous over the Hale family.

Two days after the boardroom ambush, Dominic relocated Claire and the triplets to his private estate in Newport, Rhode Island—a secluded seaside fortress surrounded by steep cliffside ocean views and state-of-the-art security systems. It was far away from the prying cameras of Manhattan and the lingering poison of the past.

For the first week, Dominic didn't go to the office once.

The man who used to work twenty-hour days managing international shipping lanes was now waking up at 6:30 AM to make pancakes in the kitchen with Mrs. Gable.

Claire watched from the doorway of the sunny kitchen as Dominic attempted to flip a chocolate chip pancake for Lily. He completely missed the pan, sending the pancake flying onto his designer linen shirt.

The three children erupted into hysterical laughter.

“Dad! You’re terrible at this!” Leo giggled, wiping a tear from his eye as he pointed at the blob of batter stuck to Dominic’s chest.

“I am a beginner, Leo,” Dominic said with mock gravity, though his gray eyes were shining with a brilliant, joyful light Claire had never seen before. “In the boardroom, I am ruthless. But in the kitchen, I am clearly outmatched.”

Claire couldn't help the warm smile that spread across her face. Seeing Dominic—the terrifying titan of Wall Street—covered in flour and chocolate, desperately trying to earn the love of his children, was doing something profound to her guarded heart.

Later that afternoon, while the kids were taking a reading break with Mrs. Gable in the estate’s vast library, Claire walked out to the sunlit garden terrace overlooking the crashing Atlantic waves.

Dominic was sitting at an wrought-iron table, a mountain of legal briefs spread out before him. The playful father was gone, replaced once again by the sharp, calculating strategist.

“What are you reading?” Claire asked, pouring herself a cup of tea and sitting across from him.

Dominic closed the folder instantly, but Claire caught the high-court seal on the cover.

“Vanessa’s legal team is pushing for a plea bargain,” Dominic said, his tone turning dark. “Her attorneys are claiming she suffered from temporary insanity due to heavy prescription medication. They’re trying to get her transferred to a private psychiatric facility instead of a maximum-security federal prison.”

Claire’s cup rattled against her saucer. “A private facility? That means she could walk free in two years!”

“Not if I have anything to say about it,” Dominic said, his voice laced with cold iron. “I spent the last three hours meeting with the Federal Prosecutor. But there’s a catch, Claire.”

“What catch?”

“To secure a life sentence without parole for conspiracy to commit murder, the prosecution needs live, in-court testimony regarding the night she threatened you in the hospital seven years ago,” Dominic looked at her, his eyes full of deep concern. “They need you to take the stand.”

Claire felt a cold shiver run down her spine. The thought of sitting in a courtroom, facing Vanessa, and reliving the most traumatizing morning of her life—when she was bleeding, alone, and forced to sign away her marriage—terrified her.

“You don't have to do it,” Dominic said immediately, reaching across the table and taking her hand in a firm, protective grip. “If you say no, I will buy out every asset her family owns, bankrupt her legal defense team, and keep her tied up in civil litigation until she’s ninety years old. You don't have to re-open those wounds.”

Claire looked down at Dominic’s large hand holding hers. The warmth of his skin gave her a sense of grounding she hadn't felt in years.

She thought of her children playing upstairs. She thought of the seven years she had spent hiding in the shadows, afraid of every strange car that parked down the street from her bookstore.

“No,” Claire said, her voice growing firm, her brown eyes blazing with a fierce, quiet courage. “I am tired of hiding, Dominic. She stole seven years of my life. She tried to make my children nameless ghosts. I will take the stand. And I will look her in the eye while they lock her away forever.”

Dominic looked at her, awe and reverence shining in his eyes. “You are the strongest woman I have ever known, Claire. I was an absolute fool for ever letting you go.”

May you like

“Yes, you were,” Claire said, though a soft, gentle curve touched her lips. “Now show me how to flip a pancake properly before the kids think their father is completely incompetent.”

Dominic laughed—a deep, rich sound that echoed across the seaside cliffs, washing away years of silence.
