Chapter 8 - Whispers in the Rose Garden
Two months later, the Moretti estate had transformed completely.
The oppressive, cold silence that had once haunted the massive fifty-room mansion was gone, replaced by the sound of laughter, running footsteps, and the sweet scent of blooming English roses drifting through open French doors.
Sarah walked along the gravel paths of the estate’s private rose garden, holding a clipboard containing architectural schematics for the new Lily Moretti Pediatric Rehabilitation Clinic, currently under construction on Chicago’s West Side.
Over the past eight weeks, Sarah had thrown herself into her new role with a brilliant, relentless passion. With Evelyn serving as her mentor and Luca providing unlimited resources and security, Sarah had already distributed over twelve million dollars in back-scholarships, funded three community clinics, and established an emergency medical hotline for families across Illinois.
She wore a simple, elegant ivory linen sundress, her hair tied in a loose ribbon, looking every bit the graceful mistress of the estate.
“Mommy! Look! Look what Grandma Evelyn taught me!”
Sarah turned, a radiant smile breaking across her face.
Down the garden path, Lily came running at full speed, her cheeks bright red, her laughter bubbling like a mountain spring. Behind her, seated under the shade of a magnificent wisteria pergola, Evelyn sat sipping iced tea, clapping her hands with delight.
Lily leaped directly into Sarah’s arms. Sarah caught her, spinning her around in the warm summer air before planting a dozen kisses all over her giggling face.
“You’re running too fast, little monkey,” Sarah teased gently, setting her down. “Dr. Vance said no marathons until your six-month checkup!”
“Grandma Evelyn said I’m fast because my heart is brand new!” Lily announced proudly, adjusting the small silver locket around her neck—a gift from Evelyn containing photos of Sarah and Luca. “And Grandma Evelyn said that tonight is a super-duper secret surprise party!”
Sarah looked toward the pergola, raising an eyebrow at Evelyn. “A secret party? Mrs. Moretti, are you conspiring behind my back again?”
Evelyn chuckled, taking a delicate sip from her porcelain teacup. “My dear Sarah, at eighty-three years old, conspiring is the only cardiovascular exercise I have left. Besides, it’s not my party. My son has been terrorizing the kitchen staff since five o'clock this morning.”
Just then, heavy footsteps crunched against the gravel path.
Luca appeared from the terrace. He wore a crisp white linen shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, displaying the intricate inkwork on his skin, and dark slacks. He looked relaxed, younger, and happier than Sarah had ever seen him. The perpetual tension in his shoulders had completely vanished over the past two months.
“Lily,” Luca said, crossing his arms and pretending to scowl sternly at the little girl. “Did you just reveal operational secrets to the director?”
Lily gasped, covering her tiny mouth with both hands, her hazel eyes dancing with mischief. “I didn't say anything, Luca! I just said it was super-duper secret!”
Luca scooped Lily up with one arm, setting her comfortably on his broad shoulder, making the little girl squeal with delight.
“You’re lucky you’re cute, Collins,” Luca smiled, booping her small nose. He turned to Evelyn. “Mom, Daniel is ready to drive you and Lily into town for your private dress fitting.”
Evelyn smiled knowingly, setting her cup down and rising with the aid of her silver-tipped cane—used now only for stability, not pain. “Come along, Lily. Let’s leave these two alone before your mother interrogates us both.”
As Evelyn and Lily disappeared toward the main house, their cheerful voices fading into the distance, a peaceful, intimate quiet settled over the rose garden.
Luca stepped closer to Sarah. The playful warmth in his eyes shifted, deepening into an intense, magnetic reverence that made Sarah’s breath catch in her throat.
“You look breathtaking, Sarah,” he said softly, his hand reaching out to tuck a loose strand of dark hair behind her ear.
“Luca... what is this party tonight?” Sarah asked, resting her hand against the firm plane of his chest, feeling the steady, powerful beat beneath his linen shirt. “Evelyn mentioned you hired the Chicago Symphony string quartet. And the ballroom... the servants told me the entire floor has been covered in white hydrangeas.”
Luca caught her hand, bringing her knuckles to his lips and kissing them softly.
“Tonight, Sarah,” Luca murmured, his dark eyes searching hers with profound sincerity, “we are hosting a celebration. Not an engagement party for syndicate alliances. Not a political gathering for corrupt politicians. Tonight, we celebrate the graduation of Michael Marino from MIT, the recovery of twelve innocent children, and the future of the Moretti family.”
He leaned down, pressing his forehead gently against hers.
“And tonight,” he added, his voice vibrating with raw vulnerability, “I am going to ask the woman who saved my soul to spend the rest of her life with me.”
Sarah’s breath hitched. Her heart pounded furiously against her ribs. “Luca...”

“Don't answer me now,” Luca whispered, a rare, breathtakingly tender smile touching his lips. “Wait until tonight. Let me court you properly, Sarah Collins. Let me show you what you mean to me.”
