Chapter 6 - The Siege of Lake Shore Drive
“Get down!” Luca roared, his hand slamming behind Sarah’s neck, forcing her down onto the floorboards between the seats as the night shattered into violence.
A hail of high-caliber rounds slammed into the reinforced ballistic glass of the Escalade, spider-webbing the dark windows into opaque white frost. The armored plating absorbed the shock, but the sheer force of the impact shook the heavy vehicle violently.
“Driver, reverse! Ram the flank!” Luca barked into the intercom, drawing two pistols from his jacket with seamless, lethal grace.
“Axle is pinned, Boss! The truck took out the front differential!” the driver yelled back, unholstering his own weapon just as a heavy round penetrated the front windshield’s unarmored seam, dropping him into the steering wheel.
Sarah screamed, covering her head as glass rained down inside the cabin.
“Sarah, look at me!” Luca demanded, pulling her close against his chest. His voice was completely devoid of fear; it was pure command, a general directing a battlefield. “Stay flat on this floor. Do not move. Do not raise your head for any reason. Understand?”
“Luca, please! Don't go out there!” she pleaded, her fingers clutching his cashmere sweater desperately. The thought of him dying in the rain tore at her chest with an agonizing intensity she hadn't realized she was capable of feeling.
Luca looked down at her terrified face, and for a fleeting second, amidst the roar of gunfire, he pressed a fierce, lingering kiss against her trembling lips.
“I’m coming back for you,” he promised, his eyes burning like black diamonds. “Always.”
Luca kicked the rear passenger door open, using the heavy armor-plated door as a tactical shield.
The scene outside was chaos. Salvatore Casaroli had deployed over a dozen seasoned mercenaries, desperate to eliminate Luca before the Bellini trial completely exposed the Casaroli family’s complicity in the federal racketeering conspiracy.
Luca leaned out from behind the door, his Sig Sauer barking with pinpoint, ruthless precision.
Two shooters advancing from the curb dropped instantly, clutching their chests. Luca moved with terrifying fluidity, advancing through the smoke and flashing muzzle flares like a ghost of vengeance. He wasn't just defending himself; he was a predator protecting his mate.
A mercenary lunged from behind a concrete pillar, raising a shotgun toward the SUV’s rear window where Sarah was hiding.
Luca didn't hesitate. He closed the distance in three violent strides, catching the barrel of the shotgun with his left arm, deflecting the blast into the empty sky, while his right elbow drove brutally into the attacker’s throat. The man collapsed, choking on his own crushed trachea, as Luca took the dropped shotgun, spinning around to unleash three devastating blasts that shredded the engine blocks of the attackers' getaway vans.
Sirens began howling in the distance—the Chicago Police Department tactical units, alerted by Daniel’s monitoring center, were descending upon the boulevard.
Seeing their ambush completely decimated by a single man and hearing the approaching sirens, the remaining three Casaroli gunmen scrambled back into a black sedan, burning rubber as they fled down an opposing ramp.
Silence fell over Lake Shore Drive, broken only by the hiss of steam from ruptured radiators and the steady drumming of rain against the pavement.
Luca stood in the center of the road, rain soaking his hair, his sweater torn at the shoulder where a bullet had grazed the fabric. He tossed the empty shotgun onto the asphalt, turned, and walked straight back to the SUV.
He ripped the door open.
Sarah was still huddled on the floor, shaking uncontrollably, her eyes squeezed shut.
“Sarah,” Luca called softly, his voice trembling with an emotion that no gunfire could ever provoke.
Sarah opened her eyes. Seeing him standing there—bleeding slightly from his shoulder, soaked in rain, but alive and whole—she let out a ragged sob and threw herself straight into his arms.
Luca caught her, lifting her bodily out of the damaged vehicle into the rain. He buried his face into the crook of her neck, holding her so tightly that neither of them could distinguish where one heartbeat ended and the other began.
“I’ve got you,” Luca whispered against her wet skin, his massive hands cradling the back of her head. “I’ve got you, my darling. It’s over.”
Ten minutes later, Daniel arrived with four reinforced Moretti cruisers, securing the perimeter just as CPD cruisers cordoned off the street.
Daniel ran up to Luca, his face pale with concern. “Boss! You’re hit!”
“It’s a scratch,” Luca dismissed coldly, refusing to release his hold on Sarah’s waist. “Salvatore Casaroli just signed his own death warrant. Where is he?”
Daniel smiled grimly. “Our informants just tracked him to his private estate in Barrington. The federal warrants were signed an hour ago, but Casaroli barricaded himself inside with his private militia.”
Luca looked down at Sarah, who was shivering against his chest. He gently wrapped his dry overcoat around her shoulders, pulling the collar tight around her neck.
“Daniel,” Luca said, his voice dropping into the terrifying cadence of a mafia sovereign. “Coordinate with the CPD SWAT commander. Tell him the Morettis will provide the breach team. I want Salvatore Casaroli in handcuffs before sunrise. If he resists... bury him in his garden.”
“Understood, Boss.”
Luca guided Sarah into the fresh, heated interior of Daniel’s cruiser. He climbed in beside her, pulling her close against his side. Sarah rested her head against his chest, listening to the strong, steady, miraculous rhythm of his heart.
“Luca?” she whispered into the darkness of the car.
“Yes, Sarah?”
“Take me to Lily,” she murmured softly. “Take us home.”
Luca looked down at her, kissing the top of her damp head with infinite reverence.
May you like
“I will, Sarah,” Luca replied softly. “I will take you both home. And you will never leave it again.”
