Chapter 10 - The Sovereign of the Heart

One year later.

The summer breeze swept over the private estate gardens, carrying the joyful sounds of children playing by the newly built pool pavilion.

Michael Marino, now an honor-roll graduate from MIT, was showing Lily Collins how to launch a miniature model rocket across the manicured lawn. Lily, bursting with health and energy, was sprinting across the grass, her dark curls bouncing in the sunlight, her laughter echoing against the limestone walls of the estate.

On the shaded stone veranda overlooking the gardens, Sarah Collins Moretti stood beside her husband.

Sarah wore a simple, flowing white sundress that accentuated the gentle, unmistakable swell of her five-month pregnancy. She looked radiant, her skin glowing with absolute peace and happiness. Around her neck hung the forty-pearl necklace, an eternal reminder of the night truth conquered greed.

Beside her, Luca stood with his arm securely wrapped around her waist, his large, tattooed hand resting tenderly against her rounded belly.

A gentle kick fluttered beneath his palm.

Luca’s handsome face broke into a broad, breathtaking smile, his dark eyes softening with wonder. “He’s active today.”

“Or she,” Sarah corrected playfully, resting her head against his shoulder. “Grandma Evelyn is convinced it’s another girl. She’s already picked out names.”

Luca chuckled, kissing the crown of Sarah’s head. “Whatever this child is, they will be born into a family built on love, Sarah. Not shadows.”

Over the past year, under Sarah’s visionary leadership and Luca’s unwavering protection, the Moretti syndicate had completely transformed. All questionable assets had been transitioned into fully transparent, legitimate international enterprises: shipping logistics, green energy infrastructure, and the world’s largest private pediatric medical endowment.

The name Moretti was no longer whispered in fear in the dark alleys of Chicago; it was celebrated on the walls of university research wings, children’s hospitals, and community centers across the country.

Footsteps sounded along the stone tiles.

Evelyn Moretti walked out onto the veranda, carrying a small silver tray with three glasses of fresh lemonade. At eighty-four years old, she moved with remarkable vitality, her cheeks rosy, her eyes bright with contentment.

“Luca, stop monopolizing my daughter-in-law,” Evelyn scolded affectionately, setting the tray down on the wrought-iron table. “Sarah has three foundation board reports to review before dinner.”

“The reports can wait, Mom,” Luca smiled, keeping his arm firmly around his wife. “Today is an official family holiday.”

Lily came running up the veranda steps, completely out of breath, clutching a cluster of yellow wild daisies she had picked from the meadow.

“Daddy! Look!” Lily cheered, running straight to Luca.

The word *Daddy* had become natural to her months ago, when Luca legally adopted her in a private courtroom ceremony where the judge had wept openly seeing the feared mafia don openly sob as he signed the adoption papers.

Luca effortlessly lifted the eight-year-old girl into his arms, kissing both of her flushed cheeks. “They’re beautiful, monkey. Who are they for?”

Lily held out the daisies toward Sarah. “For Mommy! And for the baby!”

Sarah took the flowers, her eyes glistening with sweet tears, and kissed her daughter’s forehead. “Thank you, my sweet angel.”

Evelyn stepped beside Sarah, resting her hand gently on Sarah’s shoulder as they all looked out over the sunlit gardens, watching the scholarship children and their families celebrate beneath the grand weeping willows.

“Do you remember what you told me in that hospital room, Sarah?” Evelyn asked softly, her voice filled with ancient wisdom and infinite tenderness.

“I remember, Evelyn,” Sarah replied, smiling through her tears.

“You asked how you could ever repay me,” Evelyn whispered, squeezing Sarah’s shoulder. “Look at this house today. Look at my son. Look at that little girl running without pain. You didn't just repay a debt, Sarah. You redeemed an entire bloodline.”

Luca pulled Sarah tighter against his side, his other arm holding Lily close against his chest.

As the afternoon sun dipped beneath the horizon, painting the Chicago sky in brilliant ribbons of gold, crimson, and lavender, the former housekeeper looked at the man who worshipped her, the daughter whose heart was healed, and the family she had saved from destruction.

The broken pearls had been gathered.

The scattered lives had been mended.

And in the house where she had once knelt in an apron on cold marble, Sarah Collins reigned supreme—not by fear, not by force, but as the sovereign of Luca Moretti’s heart, forever loved, forever safe, and finally home.
