Chapter 5 - Vanessa’s Desperation
The midnight air in the meatpacking district was thick with fog rising from the subway grates.
Vanessa Vance huddled inside a dark alcove beside an abandoned loading dock on 14th Street. The glamour of the eighteen-year-old society bride had vanished entirely. She wore an oversized black hoodie, dirty running shoes, and sunglasses despite the midnight darkness.
Her hands shook as she checked the burner phone Julian Cross had provided her.
The promised wire transfer of five million dollars had not arrived in her offshore account. Instead, the balance showed zero.
When she had attempted to leave the Aman New York through the service exit, two men with Eastern European accents had shadowed her for six blocks before she managed to lose them in the labyrinth of the Chelsea subway station.
Julian wasn't sending her to Dubai. Julian was tying up loose ends.
With trembling, frostbitten fingers, Vanessa dialed a number she had committed to memory—not Richard’s, but Arthur Vance’s private security line.
The line clicked on the second ring.
*"Identify yourself,"* Arthur’s clipped, military voice commanded.
"Arthur! Arthur, please don't hang up!" Vanessa sobbed, pressing the phone against her ear with both hands. "It’s Vanessa!"
A long pause hung over the line. *"You have an incredible amount of nerve calling this frequency, Miss Vance. Mr. Sterling’s legal team is currently preparing criminal fraud charges against you in three jurisdictions."*
"I don't care about the charges! Julian is trying to kill me!" she gasped, her eyes darting across the empty, wet street. "He never intended to pay me! The contract—the documents he made me sign—he has everything! He told me if I didn't play along, he would release the tapes of my brother in Chicago! My brother owes his loan sharks hundreds of thousands!"
*"Where are you?"* Arthur’s tone shifted instantly from contempt to clinical calculation.
"Fourteenth and Tenth. Behind the old meat market," she wept. "Please, Arthur. I have his recordings. Julian didn't just plan the wedding. He has a mole inside Sterling Global! He’s going to orchestrate a hostile board vote tomorrow morning to force Richard out and seize the autonomous shipping patents! That was always the goal! Richard’s patents!"
*"Stay where you are,"* Arthur ordered. *"Do not move from the shadows. A silver Suburban will arrive in four minutes. If you run, you’re on your own."*
The call disconnected.
Vanessa slid down the brick wall, pulling her hood lower. Every shadow seemed to stretch toward her. Every hiss of steam from the pavement sounded like the deflate of that cursed silicone belly.
She remembered the look on little Emily’s face when the needle went in. Emily hadn't been smug. The little girl had looked terrified, her eyes screaming for her father’s approval, only to receive a blow that had made even Vanessa’s cold, cynical heart freeze in horror.
"I’m sorry," Vanessa whispered into the damp dark. "I’m so sorry, little girl."
Suddenly, headlights swept across the wet asphalt.
A sleek black SUV rounded the corner. But it was not a silver Suburban.
It was the black Maybach from the Aman.
Vanessa gasped, scrambling to her feet, her sneakers slipping on the slick cobblestones. She turned to run down the alleyway, but the vehicle accelerated with a terrifying, electric hum, cutting across the sidewalk to block the narrow exit.
The tinted passenger window slid down smoothly.
Julian Cross sat in the back, the interior bathed in the soft blue ambient glow of the luxury cabin. He was not wearing his fedora now; his face was stark, chiseled, and completely devoid of human warmth.
"Leaving so soon, Vanessa?" Julian asked softly. "Without saying goodbye to your benefactor?"
"Stay away from me!" Vanessa shrieked, backing against a row of metal trash bins. "I called the police! They know everything! They know you blackmailed me!"
Julian smiled—a cold, pitying stretch of the lips. "You didn't call the police, darling. You called Arthur Vance. A predictable move for a frightened little girl who suddenly realizes she is out of her depth."
The driver’s door opened, and a massive man in a dark trench coat stepped out, his hand reaching inside his lapel.
"You served your purpose admirably," Julian said, his voice as calm as a summer lake. "You turned Richard Sterling into the most hated man in America. You broke his relationship with his only child. But loose threads have an annoying habit of unraveling the finest suits."
The large man advanced on Vanessa, pulling a silver cylinder from his pocket—a suppressed pistol.
Vanessa closed her eyes, screaming into the rain.
*BAM!*
The sound was not a gunshot, but the deafening crunch of metal colliding with metal at fifty miles per hour.
A heavy silver Suburban smashed directly into the side of Julian’s Maybach, shoving the luxury sedan four feet across the sidewalk into the brick facade of the loading dock.
The large henchman was thrown off his feet, rolling across the wet cobblestones.
The passenger door of the Suburban kicked open, and Richard Sterling stepped out into the rain.
He did not look like a corporate executive. His coat was gone, his sleeves were rolled to his forearms, and in his right hand, he held a heavy steel tire iron. Behind him, Arthur Vance emerged with a Glock 19 drawn and leveled.
"Get away from the girl," Richard roared, stepping over the shattered glass of the Maybach’s windows.
Julian, though shaken by the collision, managed to pull himself upright inside the cabin. He looked through the shattered glass at Richard, his eyes blazing with fury.
"You’re too late, Richard!" Julian spat blood from his lip. "The board meets in six hours! The shares have already plummeted forty percent in Tokyo trading! You’re finished!"
Richard didn't answer with words.
He swung the tire iron with every ounce of sixty years of suppressed fury, smashing Julian’s remaining window into a thousand sparkling diamonds. The spray of safety glass forced Julian to shield his face, crying out as a jagged edge sliced his cheek.
"I don't give a damn about the shares, Julian," Richard snarled, reaching through the shattered frame to grab Julian by his expensive silk tie, hauling him halfway out the window until their noses almost touched. "You can have the company. You can have the money. But you brought my baby into your sick, twisted vendetta."
Richard’s knuckles turned white around the silk.
"You touch one hair on Emily’s head, you send one investigator near her school, and I won't call the police. I won't call the SEC. I will hunt you down like the rabid dog you are, and no amount of your father’s memory will save you from me."
Sirens wailed in the distance, echoing off the high-rises of the Meatpacking District.
Arthur grabbed Richard’s shoulder. "Sir! We must go! We have the girl! The police are two minutes out!"
Richard shoved Julian backward into the ruined cabin of the Maybach. Julian collapsed onto the leather seats, his face bloody, his eyes wide with the realization that he had pushed an aging lion into a corner where civil laws no longer applied.

"Arthur, throw Vanessa in the back," Richard ordered, turning on his heel. "We’re going to war."
