Chapter 3 - The Ghost of Marcus Cross
The penthouse suite of the Aman New York smelled of sandalwood, expensive rain, and cold arrogance.
Julian Cross stood before a panoramic window looking out over Central Park, swirling two fingers of vintage Macallan in a crystal tumbler. He didn't turn around when the suite’s heavy double doors crashed open against the wall, echoing through the expansive living quarters.
Two private security guards in charcoal suits attempted to intercept Richard Sterling, but Richard shoved past them with the raw, desperate strength of a man who had nothing left to lose.
"Step back," Julian said softly, without turning around.
The guards hesitated, then melted into the shadows of the foyer.
Richard stopped ten feet behind the young man. Up close, Julian’s resemblance to his late father, Marcus Cross, was terrifying. He possessed the same broad shoulders, the same predatory grace, the same dark eyes that seemed to view every human being as either an asset or an obstacle. But Marcus had been emotional, prone to reckless passions. Julian’s demeanor was glacial.
"You look older, Richard," Julian said, his voice a low, cultured purr. "The years have been generous to your bank balance, but distinctly unkind to your conscience."
"Where is she?" Richard growled, his fists bunched inside the pockets of his cashmere coat. "Where is that little parasite you paid to infiltrate my home?"
Julian turned slowly, taking a measured sip of his scotch. "Vanessa? Oh, she’s in the master bedroom, packing her bags. A first-class ticket to Dubai, five million dollars in an offshore account, and a brand-new identity. Not bad for six months of pretending to adore an old man’s decrepit jokes."
"She made me hit my child," Richard hissed, taking two violent steps forward. "You set that up. You knew Emily had found the prosthetic belly in her closet. You orchestrated the entire confrontation at the altar!"
Julian’s smirk vanished, replaced by an expression of cold, terrifying amusement.
"I orchestrated nothing at the altar, Richard. That was all you." Julian set his glass down on a black granite pedestal with a sharp, delicate *click*. "I merely provided the scenery. I gave you a gorgeous young woman who made you feel like you were thirty-five again. I fed your pathetic, vanity-driven ego. I gave you the dream of an heir to replace the daughter you never really knew how to love after Sarah died."
"Don't you dare speak Sarah's name!"
"Why not?" Julian stepped forward, closing the distance until he was inches from the older man’s face. Richard could see the flecks of gold in Julian's eyes, and behind them, a bottomless pit of calculated hatred. "My father spoke her name often. Before you ruined him. Before you leaked his financial discrepancies to the SEC, seized his patents, and locked him out of the building he built with his bare hands."
"Your father was a criminal, Julian!" Richard shouted, his breath hot against Julian’s cheek. "He stole forty million dollars from our workers! I tried to cover for him until the federal investigators gave me an ultimatum: cooperate or go to prison beside him! He killed himself because he was a coward who couldn't face the music!"
Julian’s hand moved faster than thought.
He grabbed Richard by the lapels of his coat and shoved him backward with shocking, explosive force. Richard stumbled, crashing into a glass coffee table that shuddered under the impact.
"My father was a visionary!" Julian hissed, his icy veneer finally fracturing to reveal the boiling magma underneath. "He took you in when you were a back-alley broker with nothing but cheap suits and bad teeth! He made you! And the moment he showed weakness, you butchered him, took his company, and built your empire on his grave!"
Julian smoothed the front of his suit, taking a long, deep breath to restore his composure. The mask of polite aristocracy slid back over his face.
"Killing you would have been too simple, Richard. A bullet in an underground parking garage? A manipulated brake line on your Bentley? No. That would have made you a martyr to your precious board. You had to be dismantled the way you dismantled my family."
"By having a fake bride?" Richard sneered, coughing as he straightened his tie. "You think this ruins me? A few weeks of tabloid gossip? A dip in the stock price? I’ve survived three market crashes, boy. You haven't hurt me."
Julian let out a soft, mocking laugh that sent ice down Richard’s spine.
"A few weeks of gossip?" Julian shook his head. "Look at your phone, Richard."
Richard frowned. He pulled his encrypted phone from his breast pocket. The screen was inundated with hundreds of notifications, missed calls from his chief legal officer, push alerts from the *Wall Street Journal*, *Bloomberg*, *CNN*, and *The New York Times*.
He tapped the first headline:
**STERLING GLOBAL FOUNDER CAUGHT ON VIDEO ASSAULTING SIX-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER AT ABORTED WEDDING.**
Beneath the headline was a video clip. It was not taken from a distant guest’s trembling phone. It was high-definition, professionally shot from a hidden lens embedded in the floral arch itself.
The video captured the entire exchange: Emily’s brave, innocent warning; the sudden, brutal arc of Richard’s hand striking the child; the sickening sound of the slap; the little girl flying across the marble floor; and then, the deflation of the belly.
The caption read: *Billionaire Richard Sterling abuses his motherless child to defend a fraudulent marriage.*
The video had already been viewed eighty-four million times in three hours.
"The public doesn't care about corporate takeovers, Richard," Julian whispered, circling him like a tiger around an aging bull. "They don't care about SEC filings or balance sheets. But they care about a monster who strikes a baby girl. By sunrise, every major pension fund will divest from Sterling Global. By noon, your board of directors will vote to remove you as Chairman and CEO to save the stock from freefall."
Richard felt the air leaving his lungs. "You… you filmed it."
"Of course I filmed it," Julian replied smoothly. "And I sent a copy directly to the Child Protective Services of the City of New York, along with a formal complaint filed by an anonymous, highly concerned party."
Richard’s phone suddenly rang. The screen displayed the name of his sister-in-law: **Evelyn Hayes-Vance**.
Evelyn, the fierce, uncompromising younger sister of his late wife Sarah. A federal appellate judge who had warned him from day one that Vanessa was poison.
With trembling fingers, Richard answered. "Evelyn—"
*"Richard,"* Evelyn’s voice came through the speaker, colder than liquid nitrogen. *"I am currently at your penthouse with two caseworkers from Manhattan Child Protective Services and two armed officers of the NYPD. If you are not back here in fifteen minutes, they are breaking the lock on Emily's room, and I am signing the emergency protective custody order myself."*
"Evelyn, wait! It was a setup! There is a man—Julian Cross—"
*"I saw the video, Richard,"* she interrupted, her voice breaking with disgust. *"You struck Sarah’s baby. You have fifteen minutes."*
The line went dead.
Julian leaned against the window, raising his glass of scotch in a silent, mocking toast.

"Check," Julian whispered. "Now run home, Richard. Run home and see what’s left of your empire."
