Chapter 7 - Elena’s Bitter Return

Karma, I have come to learn, does not work on a predictable schedule, but it always arrives with devastating precision.
A week after the auction, I was dining with a major architectural client at an upscale restaurant near Newbury Street. As we finalized the contracts for a seven-figure civic renovation project, a sharp commotion broke out near the coat check.
"I have an appointment! Tell him Elena is here!"
I turned slightly. Standing in the foyer, arguing violently with the maître d', was Elena Ramos.
The mistress who had spent the better part of a year flaunting my husband's stolen money on tropical beaches looked completely unravelled. Her designer handbag was scuffed, her hair was dyed an unnatural brassy blonde, and her eyes darted frantically around the dining room.
When her eyes landed on me, she froze. A mixture of venom and desperate calculation crossed her features. She bypassed the staff and marched directly toward my table.
"You," Elena snarled, slamming her palms onto the white linen tablecloth, sending wine glasses wobbling. "You ruined everything! You froze Daniel’s secondary accounts! The bank seized the Porsche he leased for me, and your lawyers put a lien on my Miami condo!"
My dinner guest, a distinguished city commissioner, stared at her in utter astonishment.
I casually wiped the corners of my mouth with my cloth napkin, my pulse never accelerating by a single beat.
"Miss Ramos," I said smoothly. "If you are referring to the condo purchased with embezzled funds from my design firm, the Massachusetts Superior Court ruled that purchase a fraudulent conveyance. Those were proceeds of grand larceny. The state didn't seize your home; they recovered stolen property."
"He told me he was worth tens of millions!" Elena shrieked, the veneer of high-class sophistication peeling away entirely. "He told me you were just a boring accountant living off his family’s coat-tails! He promised me a penthouse in Manhattan!"
"Then I suggest you take that up with Daniel," I replied. "Though you might have to visit him at the extended-stay motel on Route 1 where he currently resides."
"You think you’re so smart?" Elena leaned down, her breath smelling of cheap gin. "I kept records, Claire. Every transaction, every conversation. Daniel wasn't just stealing from your business. He was using your firm's federal tax IDs to launder money through foreign shell accounts. If I go down for tax fraud, your firm goes down with me!"
The dining room went completely still. Elena grinned, convinced she had delivered a checkmate.
I pulled out my phone, unlocked it, and tilted the screen toward her. On it was an email sent thirty minutes prior from the United States Attorney’s Office.
"You’re late, Elena," I whispered. "I turned over your encrypted ledgers to the Department of Justice three weeks ago, along with a full whistleblower disclosure. They offered me full corporate indemnity. You and Daniel, however... are facing eight counts of federal wire fraud and identity theft."
Right behind her, two plainclothes detectives stepped forward.
"Elena Ramos?" one of them stated, flashing a badge. "Put your hands behind your back."

As the handcuffs clicked around her wrists, Elena began screaming curses that echoed through the crystal chandeliers of the dining room. I took a slow sip of water, apologized to the commissioner for the brief interruption, and resumed reviewing our contracts.
