Chapter 11 - The Desperate Ambush

Two weeks later, Daniel made bail.
It wasn't Madison who had posted it; an unsavory private bail bondsman had financed his release against the promise of a future lawsuit settlement that Daniel had entirely fabricated.
I was returning home from a late dinner with Julian Vance. Julian had walked me to the front gate of the brownstone, but I insisted I was fine to walk up the brick pathway alone. It was past midnight, and a fresh blanket of white snow muffled every sound on the hill.
As I reached the front steps, a shadow detached itself from beneath the overhang of the carriage house.
"Claire."
I spun around. Daniel stepped into the pool of light cast by the porch lantern.
He was emaciated. His eyes were sunken, bloodshot, and wild. His coat was stained, and his bare hands were trembling from the sub-zero temperature.
"Daniel," I said evenly, keeping my finger hovering over the emergency SOS button on my phone inside my coat pocket. "You are violating the restraining order. Step back right now."
"I don't care about the order!" he rasped, stepping closer. "Look at me! Look at what you’ve done to me! I don't have a penny left! My mother is staying in a shelter in South Boston, Claire! A shelter!"
"You did this to yourself," I said coldly. "You stole from me. You brought another woman into our life. You threw me onto the street."
"I made a mistake!" he sobbed suddenly, dropping to his knees on the freezing brick path, clutching at the hem of my wool coat. "I was an idiot! Elena poisoned my mind! My mother pushed me! Claire, please... we were married for five years. You loved me. You can call off the prosecutors. You have millions now! Just give me enough to settle my debts and get a small apartment. I’ll disappear. I swear I’ll never bother you again!"
I looked down at the man who had once stood over me in our Brookline foyer, sneering that I was a peasant who had forgotten my place.
"No, Daniel," I said, my voice quiet, final, and devoid of hate. "You told me that night that I was nothing without you. You told me that everything in your house belonged to you, and that I had no rights. You wanted to be the sole master of your life. Now you are."
"You heartless monster!" he roared, lunging upward to grab my arm.
Before his fingers could graze my sleeve, a heavy gloved hand clamped down on his collar, yanking him backward into the snow. Julian Vance, who had waited down the block to ensure my safety, pinned Daniel to the ground with a knee to his spine.
Within two minutes, the flashing blue lights of three police cruisers painted the snow in violent shades of red and blue. Daniel was dragged to his feet, screaming incoherently into the night as the officers forced him into the back of a squad car.
"You'll pay for this, Claire!" he shrieked through the glass. "You took everything! Everything!"
Julian stood beside me, adjusting his coat. "Are you alright?"
May you like
"I'm fine," I said, watching the cruiser drive away. "Because for the first time... he can never hurt me again."
