Chapter 11 - The Lion's Den

Agent Miller and the pale, sweating marshals retreated down the corridor like whipped curs, the heavy security doors slamming shut behind them with a definitive clack.
The silence that returned to Room 314 was heavy, thick with the revelation that still hung in the air.
Elena Vance stood frozen, looking from Gabriel to the little girl in the bed, her mouth slightly open. "Gabriel... is that true? Is she really—"
"Does it matter?" Gabriel replied coldly, not breaking his gaze from the door.
Elena paused, looking at the papers on the bed, then looked at the fierce, terrifying protectiveness in Gabriel’s eyes. A slow, knowing smile touched her lips. "No. I suppose with you, it doesn't matter at all. The paper is real enough to hold off the feds."
Gabriel turned back to Elsie. The little girl had pulled the blankets up to her nose, watching him with big, solemn eyes.
Gabriel walked over and knelt down beside the bed so that his eyes were level with hers. The cold fury that had filled the room vanished, replaced by an uncertainty that Gabriel had never felt in his entire adult life. He was a man who commanded armadas, who negotiated with heads of cartels, yet looking into the eyes of this four-year-old girl made his hands tremble.
"Did you mean it?" Elsie whispered softly, her small voice breaking the quiet. "Am I... am I yours?"
Gabriel reached out, his thumb gently brushing a stray tear from her cheek.
"Only if you want to be, Elsie," Gabriel said, his voice softer than anyone had ever heard it. "I am not a good man. My world is loud, and it is dangerous. But if you stay with me... nobody will ever make you feel cold again. Nobody will ever make you hide in the dark."
Elsie looked down at her small, trembling hands. Then she reached out, taking Gabriel’s massive, scarred hand and placing it against her cheek.
"I don't mind the loud," she whispered, leaning into his warmth. "I just don't want to be alone anymore."
Something broke inside Gabriel Rinaldi—a fortress wall he had spent thirty-five years building around his soul shattered into dust. He leaned forward, wrapping his arms around her small, frail frame, pulling her gently against his chest as she buried her face in his shoulder.
"You will never be alone again, little star," Gabriel murmured into her hair. "I swear it."
Dominic cleared his throat softly from the doorway, looking visibly uncomfortable interrupting the moment, but the urgency in his face could not be ignored.
Gabriel gently laid Elsie back against her pillows, kissed her forehead, and walked out into the corridor, closing the door behind him.
"What is it, Dominic?" Gabriel asked, his demeanor hardening back to granite.
"Vincent Moretti just made a move," Dominic said, handing Gabriel a secure tablet. "He knew the CPS play was a long shot. It was a distraction."
"A distraction from what?"
"Twenty minutes ago, three heavy tactical units breached your private compound in the hills," Dominic said grimly. "They didn't go for the vaults. They didn't go for the servers. They went into your private study, blew the floor safe, and took the black archive."
Gabriel’s eyes narrowed into terrifying, lethal slits.

The black archive contained the original, unredacted files of the Danvers family—including the medical records of Clara Danvers, and the one secret Gabriel had hidden even from himself.
