Chapter 10 - The Broken Seal

The temperature in the room plummeted to sub-zero.

Behind Gabriel, Elsie let out a tiny, frightened gasp, her little fingers clutching at the back of Gabriel’s jacket. She didn't understand the legal words, but she understood the uniforms, the guns, and the cold, hostile tone of the woman speaking.

"Mr. Gabriel..." Elsie whimpered, her voice trembling. "Don't let them take me back to the dark room. Please."

Gabriel reached behind his back without looking, finding her tiny hand and squeezing it once—firm, steady, reassuring.

"Nobody is taking you anywhere, Elsie," Gabriel said. His voice was steady, but the veins on his neck bulged against his collar.

He looked at Agent Miller, then glanced at the federal marshals whose hands were resting nervously on their holsters. They knew who Gabriel Rinaldi was. Their knuckles were white, their eyes darting around the room, acutely aware that Dominic was standing behind them with his hand inside his jacket.

"Judge Vance Moretti," Gabriel repeated slowly, tasting the name like poison. "Vincent Moretti’s cousin. A crooked municipal judge whose gambling debts on the docks amount to four million dollars."

"The order is legally binding, Mr. Rinaldi," Agent Miller said, though her voice wavered slightly beneath his predatory stare. "You have no biological link to this child. You have no legal guardianship papers filed with the state. By law, you are a stranger harboring a minor whose legal next-of-kin has petitioned for custody."

"Next of kin?" Gabriel’s eyebrows rose slightly. "Julian Danvers is dead. He died in a ditch in Bogota two weeks ago. And Clara Danvers named me."

"Clara Danvers was declared legally incompetent three months before her death due to medical distress," Miller countered, thrusting the court order forward. "Her final will was voided by Judge Moretti’s court yesterday afternoon. The custody of Elsie Danvers falls to the Moretti family trust, as Julian’s primary creditors. We are here to enforce the court’s transfer."

Elena Vance gasped in horror. "Are you insane? You're handing a sick child over to a mafia syndicate to settle an unpaid debt?!"

"We are enforcing the law, Dr. Vance," Miller replied coldly. "Marshals, secure the child."

The two marshals took half a step forward.

The distinct, chilling sound of four semi-automatic slides being racked echoed from the hallway. Dominic stepped to the side, revealing four of Gabriel’s private security operators standing in the open doorway, their carbines pointed directly at the marshals' chests.

"Take another step," Gabriel said, his voice dropping into a register that made the hair on Miller’s arms stand up. "And I will demonstrate precisely how much I care about your court order."

"You're threatening federal officers!" Miller shrieked, backing into the marshals. "This is treason! This is kidnapping!"

"This is my daughter," Gabriel roared, the sheer volume and ferocity of his voice shaking the glass partitions of the room.

The entire suite went dead silent. Even Elsie stopped crying, staring up at Gabriel with wide, wondering eyes.

Gabriel reached inside his breast pocket. He pulled out a thick, cream-colored document bearing an official embossed seal from the Federal District Court of New York, tossing it onto the foot of Elsie’s bed.

"Read it, Miller," Gabriel ordered.

Agent Miller, trembling, reached out and picked up the parchment. As her eyes scanned the first paragraph, the color drained completely from her face.

"This... this is an executive paternity legitimization and sealed adoption decree..." she stammered. "Signed by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court... dated three days ago."

"I knew Clara was sick six months ago," Gabriel said, stepping toward Miller, forcing her to take two steps backward until she hit the doorframe. "I had the paternity tested six months ago. Clara lied to Julian, but she never lied to me. Elsie is my biological blood. The Danvers name was an alias. Her legal name is Elsie Rinaldi. And this hospital is now her private residence."

Gabriel leaned down until his eyes were inches from Miller’s face.

"Now, take your crooked warrant, crawl back to Vincent Moretti, and tell him that his debt with Julian is void. But his debt with me has just come due."
