Chapter 8 - The Verdict of Conscience and Justice

Six months after the inauguration of the veterans' support center, my life had settled into the peaceful yet purposeful rhythm of a senior special operations officer.
On a weekend afternoon, I decided to drive back to my old family estate in the suburbs of Norfolk—where I had grown up amid coldness and my father’s rigid rules.
The sprawling mansion was now sealed and auctioned off per federal court orders to replenish public funds. The front lawn was growing over with green moss, yet the rose bushes my mother had tended still bloomed vibrantly under the afternoon sun, proving beauty and life triumph even in the darkest corners.
I stepped out of the car, taking a leisurely stroll down the garden path.
My phone rang. A text from Special Agent Sterling: “Major Vance, tonight is the National Security Council’s annual operational gala at the Grand Horizon. Admiral Mercer would like you to attend as keynote speaker.”
I smiled, typing back: “Understood, Agent Sterling. I’ll be there on time.”
Puting my phone away, I looked up as the sunset painted the horizon over the ocean. The blazing red glow reflecting off the rolling waves was breathtakingly beautiful.

Five years ago, I walked out of this house with a small backpack, a scarred back, and a broken heart. Today, I returned with the rank of Major on my shoulders, a calm, strong, and proud heart.
I was no longer the pitiful daughter enduring contempt and insults from her family. I was the author of my own story—a narrative written in loyalty, honor, and justice.
