Chapter 6 - Scars and Glory

Three months after the fateful night at Arthur Vance’s retirement gala, Norfolk welcomed its first winter with biting winds sweeping in from the ocean.

Inside the formal courtyard of Naval Headquarters, a quiet yet profoundly solemn national honors ceremony was underway. Under a gray morning sky, rows of officers in pristine dress whites stood straight and rigid, eyes fixed toward the awards podium.

I stood there, clad in my formal Navy dress uniform, my left chest adorned with the highest medals awarded for national security service.

Admiral Jonathan Mercer stepped forward, holding a velvet box containing the Honorary Naval Colors and the Distinguished Service Medal—the highest award bestowed upon military personnel who successfully complete exceptionally hazardous missions.

– “Captain Emily Vance,” Admiral Mercer read aloud, his voice echoing across the solemn grounds, “for extraordinary courage, absolute loyalty, and brilliant exploits in successfully dismantling the decade’s largest international crime syndicate, the Department of the Navy officially promotes you to the rank of Major, and appoints you Head of Special Strategic Operations for the Pacific Region.”

The entire formation saluted in unison. Bugles sounded a triumphant call, harmonizing with the distant crash of sea waves.

I saluted back, my posture unwavering. Beneath the solemn military uniform, the scars on my back remained—the indelible marks of the past, the wounds my family once branded as a disgrace, now transformed into the brightest medals of honor in my life.

After the ceremony concluded and guests dispersed to congratulate one another, I walked alone to the edge of the pier, gazing out at the vast, boundless expanse of the sea.

My phone buzzed in my pocket. A text message from the federal penitentiary. “Inmate Arthur Vance has signed the waiver abandoning all appeals, accepting a 25-year prison sentence. Inmate Lauren Vance received a 5-year prison sentence with mitigating factors for full cooperation.”

I finished reading, exhaling a quiet sigh of relief. All family grievances, falsehoods, and past filth were finally closed by a fair judgment of the law.

– “Major Vance.”

I turned. Special Agent Sterling approached, smiling as he handed me a large brown manila envelope. – “Congratulations on your promotion. This is the remaining legal asset portfolio of Vance Corp. after liquidation of all debts and forfeiture of illicit assets. Per court ruling, as the sole honest shareholder standing on the side of justice, all of these funds belong to you. What do you plan to do with them?”

I took the envelope, gazing out toward the open ocean where cargo ships sailed peacefully across the waves.

– “Use them to establish a Foundation supporting special ops veterans and their families—those who quietly sacrificed their youth for the country without ever demanding applause, Mr. Sterling.”

Sterling smiled with profound respect: – “A decision truly worthy of someone bearing scars of glory.”
