Chapter 3 - The Witness Statement (Expanded Version)

The living room felt smaller now, crowded with uniforms, medical gear, and the suffocating weight of a secret exposed to the light. Officer Miller, a veteran with tired eyes and a notebook already open in his hand, knelt down beside my chair while his partner approached Daniel.

"Ma'am, I need you to tell me exactly what happened," Officer Miller said gently, his pen poised over the paper. "Take your time. You're safe here."

I looked at the coffee table where a framed photograph of our tenth anniversary sat. In the picture, I was smiling, leaning into Daniel’s shoulder on a beach in Maui. I remembered the bruise hidden beneath my sundress that day—earned because I had accidentally spoken over him at dinner the night before, and he had punished me in the hotel bathroom.

"He was angry because I couldn't finish cooking dinner," I told the officer, my voice steady now. "I had surgery a week ago to remove a tumor. He knew I wasn't supposed to lift or twist or experience pressure. When I got sick, he shoved my head down, and when I tried to speak, he jammed his fingers directly into the wound to punish me for being weak."

Across the room, Daniel’s voice boomed defensively as his officer questioned him. "She's lying! She's having a psychotic break from the narcotics! Look at her, she's unstable! She's always making things up for attention!"

Officer Miller nodded slowly, recording every word. "And has he ever hurt you before, Mrs. Mercer?"

The question hung in the air like glass waiting to shatter. Eleven years of hidden bruises, isolated holidays, controlled finances, and psychological dismantling flashed behind my eyes.

"Yes," I said clearly. "For eleven years."

Officer Miller closed his notebook with a sharp snap and stood up. He didn't look at Daniel's furious protests; he looked straight at his partner. "Cuffs on. Let's take him down to the station for questioning regarding domestic assault and endangerment of a vulnerable patient."
