Chapter 23 - The Extraction Signal

The tender reunion was shattered instantly by the shrill, deafening wail of the facility's master alarm system. Red emergency sirens bathed the concrete walls in a bloody, spinning glow.

*"WARNING,"* an automated voice boomed through the overhead speakers in cold, robotic tones. *"PERIMETER BREACH IN SECTOR FOUR. LETHAL FORCE AUTHORIZED. FACILITY LOCKDOWN IN THREE MINUTES."*

Vance rushed into the cell, tossing a tactical jacket over Sarah’s shoulders. "The main security grid just came back online! Hunt’s rapid-response team just landed on the upper helipad! We have to move right now!"

Sarah wiped the tears from her face, her demeanor transforming instantly from a weeping mother into a hardened tactical commander. "Vance, the ledger. I have it."

She reached inside the hollow base of the cell's rusted metal sink, prying open a false pipe joint to retrieve a sealed titanium data canister no larger than a fountain pen.

"Everything is in here," Sarah said, handing the canister to me. "Every wire transfer, every offshore shell company, every corrupt official Arthur Hunt and Thomas Mercer ever bought. This is our ticket to freedom."

"Let's get out of here before this bunker becomes our tomb," I said, securing the canister in my tactical vest.

We sprinted back down the corridor, supporting Sarah between us as we made our way toward the emergency maintenance lift that led to the surface landing pad. Gunfire echoed from the upper catwalks as Aegis Global contractors flooded the stairwells, their high-powered tactical lights slicing through the smoke.

Vance fired controlled bursts, suppressing the vanguard while I operated the manual override of the cargo elevator. The iron cage groaned as the steel cables hauled us upward, toward the stormy night air.

The elevator doors clanged open onto the rain-swept landing pad atop the sea cliffs.

The storm was howling with unprecedented fury. Lightning illuminated the churning Atlantic ocean hundreds of feet below. Above the helipad, hovering fifty feet in the air through the blinding sheets of rain, was our rescue helicopter, its spotlight cutting through the darkness to guide us aboard.

Brooke was leaning out of the open cabin door, waving frantically, while Hannah held onto the safety harness beside the winch line.

"The winch is down!" Vance roared over the storm. "Rebecca, get Sarah on the cable first!"

I hooked Sarah into the extraction harness, securing the heavy carabiner to her vest. "Go, Mom! I'm right behind you!"

"We go together, Rebecca!" Sarah yelled back against the hurricane winds. "I am not leaving you behind again!"

Before I could hook my own harness to the dual ring, a high-caliber sniper round detonated against the concrete landing pad, missing my boot by inches.

A second round tore through the helicopter’s auxiliary spotlight, plunging the helipad into near-total darkness.

Across the tarmac, emerging from the reinforced stairwell of the upper observation tower, stood a squad of heavily armored mercenaries. In their center walked a tall, immaculate man in a dark trench coat, holding a heavy military radio.

Director Arthur Hunt.

His cold, calculating voice didn't come through the storm—it boomed across the entire facility through the perimeter loudspeakers, amplified to drown out the thunder.

*"Captain Cross! Rebecca!"* Hunt’s voice echoed with chilling finality. *"You fought admirably. But look around you. Your helicopter’s fuel line is pinned in my sniper's crosshairs. One twitch of his finger, and your sister, your lawyer, and your loyal pilot die in a fireball."*

Hunt raised his hand, and five laser sights converged simultaneously on the hovering helicopter cabin—right on Hannah’s chest.

Hannah froze in terror, looking down at me from forty feet above.

*"Here is my proposal,"* Director Hunt spoke, stepping forward to the edge of the helipad, his face illuminated by a flash of lightning. *"Drop the data canister. Surrender the girl. Do that, Captain Cross, and I will let your younger daughter and your friends fly out of this airspace alive. Refuse... and I will erase all of you from history tonight."*

Sarah gripped my arm, her gray eyes burning with fierce, murderous fury. Vance raised his rifle, calculating the impossible odds. Above us, Hannah was crying, shaking her head, screaming into the wind: *"Don't do it, Rebecca! Don't let him win!"*

The laser dots burned bright red against Hannah’s chest. The storm raged around us.

And as my fingers touched the titanium ledger in my pocket, the sniper’s rifle bolt clicked in the darkness.
