Chapter 15 - The Safehouse on the Ridge

The unmarked sedan tore through the back roads of the Appalachian foothills, bypassing primary state routes in favor of unmapped logging corridors. Inside the vehicle, nobody spoke for the first thirty miles. The only sound was the static of an encrypted police scanner mounted beneath the dash, crackling with frantic dispatches regarding a "high-priority federal pursuit" in which we were clearly the quarry.

Hannah was curled tightly against my side, clutching my arm as if letting go would mean her own destruction. Brooke had already opened her briefcase, laying the yellowed dossier flat against her knees, cross-referencing Vance’s military credentials against the documentation taken from Mercer's safe.

"Everything matches," Brooke whispered, looking up with pale, disbelieving eyes. "Vance Sterling was Sarah Cross’s commanding officer during the 1999 joint task force in Bogota. But this part doesn't make sense, Colonel. The document says Captain Sarah Cross went missing in action during an unsanctioned raid."

"It was sanctioned at the very highest levels," Vance said, his eyes flicking between the road and the rearview mirror. "Sarah discovered that a faction inside the defense apparatus—calling themselves the Directorate—was laundering billions through shadow logistics companies. Thomas Mercer was their money mule in the state legislature. When Sarah gathered the evidence to indict them, the Directorate burned her team. They arranged an extraction that was actually an ambush."

"And Daniel Cole?" I asked, my voice thick with bitter resentment. "What was his role in destroying my life?"

"Daniel was the pilot assigned to evacuate Sarah and her infant daughter," Vance answered grimly. "When the trap sprung, Daniel panicked. The Directorate offered him an out: hand Sarah over to their offshore contractors, take the baby, and disappear into a civilian identity. If Sarah ever thought her daughter was alive and free, she would fight to the death to escape. But if Daniel raised you in the shadows, disguised your heritage, and ultimately discredited your credibility by painting you as an irredeemable convict... Sarah’s spirit would remain broken."

"And Eleanor?" Hannah asked, her voice cracking. "My mother... she knew?"

"Eleanor was the collateral payment," Vance replied coldly. "A woman obsessed with social climbing who despised Rebecca from the day she arrived. Eleanor knew Rebecca wasn't Daniel's biological child. She resented the ghost of Sarah Cross every time she looked at Rebecca's face. When Rebecca reached adulthood, framing her for a crime and erasing her existence became Eleanor's crowning achievement—she finally erased the living memory of the woman Daniel had truly loved."

We pulled into a concealed concrete bunker nestled inside the granite bluff of an abandoned quarry station—miles away from the previous shootout. Heavy steel doors swung shut behind us with an ominous thud.

Inside the safehouse, rows of high-grade telecommunication terminals glowed in the gloom. Vance stepped out, gesturing for us to follow him toward a central monitor displaying real-time satellite feeds of the Atlantic ocean.

"For twenty-four years, I believed Sarah was buried in a mass grave," Vance said, tapping a coordinate on the screen. "Until forty-eight hours ago, when an encrypted emergency ping bounced off a defunct naval relay near the Azores archipelago. It was Sarah’s personal emergency beacon."

I looked at the blip on the digital map, feeling an overwhelming tide of emotion threaten to shatter my composure. "You're telling me my mother is out there? After everything Daniel and Eleanor did to break me, she's still holding on?"

May you like

"She isn't just holding on, Rebecca," Vance said, turning to face me. "She knows you survived. And she just activated the extraction protocol."
