Chapter 11 - Legal Counterstrike

That weekend, I decided it was time to stop playing defense.

I hired Sarah Vance, a no-nonsense local attorney specializing in financial elder fraud and identity theft. We sat in her office on Monday morning with Briana beside me, laying out every document: the fraudulent retail cards, the forged LendPoint loan, the unauthorized Amazon orders, and the malicious HR complaint.

Attorney Vance reviewed the documents with a grim, professional smile.

"Your mother made a fatal mistake by crossing state lines with digital loan applications," Vance explained. "The LendPoint loan originated from a server in Delaware, while she applied from here. That elevates the identity theft from a local misdemeanor dispute into federal wire fraud territory. Furthermore, filing a provably false ethics report with your employer meets the statutory definition of tortious interference with prospective economic advantage."

"What does that mean in plain English?" Briana asked.

"It means we aren't just sending a cease-and-desist letter," Vance said, closing the file. "We are filing a formal criminal complaint with the state police financial crimes division, and we are petitioning the civil court for an immediate emergency restraining order and full asset freeze to secure restitution."

Two days later, two uniformed deputies pulled into the driveway of Mom’s suburban house.

Neighbors watched through their blinds as the deputies served Mom with official court summons and an emergency protective order barring her from contacting me, Briana, or stepping foot within five hundred feet of our workplaces.

When Mom tried to scream at the deputies that she was the mother and had rights, the lead deputy bluntly informed her that if she violated the boundary by a single phone call, she would spend the weekend in the county lockup.

The golden facade was completely shattered. The law had finally arrived at her doorstep.
