Chapter 10 - The Desperate Retaliation

While Briana was rebuilding her character from the ground up, Mom was spiraling into absolute chaos.

Cut off from Aunt Clara’s money and realizing that neither of her daughters would fund her lifestyle, Mom decided that if she was going down, she would drag me down with her.

It started with a formal chargeback dispute filed against my bank. Mom claimed that the fourteen thousand dollars in returns I had processed on Amazon were unauthorized, alleging that I had illegally accessed *her* banking portal to initiate refunds.

When that was swiftly dismissed by the fraud team due to the clear IP tracking evidence, she escalated.

One Thursday afternoon, while I was reviewing seasonal inventory metrics in my office, my store manager, Marcus, knocked on the frosted glass door with a grave expression.

"Sylvia, do you have a minute?" he asked.

"Sure, Marcus. What's up?"

"Corporate HR just received a three-page complaint via the regional ethics hotline," he said, handing me a printed email. "An anonymous tipster claims you’ve been using company shipping accounts for personal logistics and running an unauthorized resale business out of our stockroom."

I skimmed the letter. The phrasing was unmistakable: flamboyant adjectives, melodramatic accusations, and glaring legal misunderstandings. It was Mom’s handwriting transcribed into an email.

"Marcus," I said, looking up calmly. "My mother has been defrauding my family for years. When I cut her off last month, she threatened to ruin my career. I have full documentation from the county sheriff’s department, fraud reports from Amazon, and an ongoing investigation with LendPoint financial."

Marcus let out a slow sigh of relief. "Thank God. Sylvia, you’re the most meticulous assistant manager in this district. Nobody on the executive team believed this garbage for a second, but corporate protocol requires an audit. You have my full support."

Mom thought she was playing a game of intimidation. But she had forgotten that unlike her, I had spent ten years building an unshakeable reputation of honesty and competence. Her cheap arrows were bouncing right off my armor.
