Chapter 8 - The Video Evidence

My mother’s testimony broke the dam. The defense attempted to claim she was confused, but Katherine was ready for the knockout blow.

"Your Honor, we submit Exhibit A: the cell phone video recorded by Elena."

The lights in the courtroom were dimmed. High-definition screens illuminated the room as the video played.

The audio echoed loudly through the speakers—the violent thud, Maya’s terrified cries, Marcus’s terrifying growl, and the chilling voices of the family members telling me to "put the phone away" and "handle it privately."

The judge’s expression turned to pure thunder as he watched Marcus corner me, demanding the phone, while my mother stepped between Maya and safety.

When the video finished, the silence in the courtroom was absolute.

The defense lawyer slowly sat down, realizing there was no argument, no spin, and no lie that could undo what every person in that room had just witnessed with their own eyes.

The judge looked down at Marcus. "In my twenty-five years on the bench, I have rarely seen such a blatant display of cruelty and cold detachment. Bail is revoked immediately."

Marcus was cuffed right there in the courtroom and dragged away toward the holding cells, screaming threats at me, his lawyer, and the judge until the heavy doors slammed shut behind him.
