Chapter 6 - The Web of Deception

With Marcus in jail awaiting his bail hearing, Katherine and I began digging through the financial documents Uncle Richard had provided. What we uncovered was staggering.

For over six years, Marcus had been systematically siphoning money from our joint savings and Maya's college fund into off-shore accounts and dummy LLCs. He had even convinced my mother to sign papers making him the sole manager of her estate properties, giving him complete control over her finances as well.

My mother hadn't just protected Marcus out of warped family pride—she was financially dependent on him without even knowing he was quietly stripping her assets away too.

When I scheduled a private meeting with my mother at a neutral coffee shop, she arrived looking smug, expecting me to beg for reconciliation.

"Have you come to your senses?" my mother asked coldly, setting her handbag on the table. "You can still drop the charges, Elena. We can tell the judge it was all a misunderstanding."

Instead of arguing, I slid a folder of financial audits across the table.

"Read page three," I said quietly. "Marcus didn't just abuse your granddaughter. He took out two mortgages on your house using your power of attorney. He’s been bankrupting you for three years."

My mother’s face drained of all color as her eyes scanned the official bank statements. The delusion she had clung to so tightly began to shatter right in front of me.
