Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Confrontation

At precisely 2:00 PM, the grand doors of the Pentagon Annex Briefing Room opened.
Arthur, Trevor, and a team of six high-priced corporate lawyers and engineers walked in, carrying leather briefcases and glowing tablet computers.
Arthur held his head high, adopting the arrogant posture of a billionaire titan who owned every room he walked into. But as he looked toward the center of the dais, his confidence wavered slightly.
Sitting at the head of the three-tiered review panel was Kate.
She sat flanked by four generals, three admirals, and top cyber-security analysts from the Department of Defense. Her dress blues were immaculate, her ribbons telling the story of twenty-six years of heroic service—Valorous Unit Award, Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit.
Arthur cleared his throat and stepped up to the podium, offering a warm, paternal smile.
"Members of the panel, distinguished guests... and especially, General Mercer," Arthur said, his tone thick with deliberate warmth. "It is a profound honor to stand before you today. As CEO of Mercer Defense Tech, and as a father who couldn't be prouder to see his own flesh and blood sitting at the helm of our nation's defense..."
TAK.
The sharp sound of Kate’s pen striking the wooden desk echoed through the microphone, cutting Arthur off instantly.
"Mr. Mercer," Kate said, her tone as cold as winter ice. "This is an official Department of Defense procurement hearing. Personal overtures, family claims, and theatrical sentimentality are strictly out of order. Present your technical data, or yield the floor to the next contractor."
A quiet hum of murmurings rippled through the officers in the room. Trevor flushed red, nervously shuffling his papers, while Arthur’s smile instantly froze, turning into a mask of barely suppressed rage.
"Very well, General," Arthur said, straining to keep his voice polite. "We are presenting the 'Aegis-X Cyber Shield'—a revolutionary defense architecture designed to protect US military satellites and communications from hostile foreign infiltration."
Trevor stepped forward, clicking a remote to display a glowing 3D hologram of the software system. "As you can see, our encryption algorithm is lightyears ahead of our competitors. It is unbreakable."
"Unbreakable?" Kate asked quietly. She reached into her folder and pulled out a single red-bound document. "Then perhaps you can explain the critical vulnerability identified in Section 4B of your source code during our red-team penetration test last night?"
May you like
Arthur’s heart skipped a beat. "What penetration test?"
Kate looked up, her gaze piercing right through him. "The one ordered by my office twelve hours ago."
