Chapter 1 - The Cold Truth at the Gates

General Vance didn’t even glance at the hand Arthur Mercer extended so proudly. His eyes—sharp, steel-gray, and seasoned by decades of command—swept past the billionaire CEO, past his flustered stepson Trevor, and past the sea of gaping VIPs standing behind the White House security barricades.
Instead, General Vance walked directly up to Kate.
He came to a strict halt three feet away, brought his hand to his brow, and rendered a crisp, unwavering salute.
"General Mercer," Vance said, his voice echoing loudly in the silent courtyard. "The President is waiting for you in the Oval Office. We’re ready to commence the Defense Innovation Briefing."
Arthur’s hand remained frozen mid-air. Trevor’s jaw dropped so low he looked absurd in his fifty-thousand-dollar tuxedo. Evelyn gasped, her hand clutching her pearl necklace so tightly the string threatened to snap.
"General?" Arthur stammered, his voice cracking like dry wood. "Vance, excuse me... there’s clearly a mistake. That’s—that’s just Kate. She’s an entry-level security officer. A guard."
General Vance slowly turned his head toward Arthur. The gaze was cold enough to freeze boiling water.
"Mr. Mercer," Vance said coldly, "you are addressing General Kathryn Mercer. Four-Star General, Vice Chief of Staff of the United States Army, Chief Director of the Pentagon’s Advanced Cyber-Defense Taskforce, and recipient of the Distinguished Service Cross. She is not an entry-level guard. She is the highest-ranking officer in this courtyard."
The silence that followed was suffocating.
Arthur looked as if he had been struck by lightning. His face drained of all color. Twenty-six years ago, he had disowned a twenty-two-year-old girl who chose an ROTC scholarship over his executive boardroom, labeling her a failure who would amount to nothing more than a sergeant digging ditches. He had told his country-club peers that his daughter was dead to him.
And now, standing in the shade of the White House columns, he realized that the four silver stars resting on her shoulders outweighed every dollar in his bank account.
Kate slowly returned General Vance’s salute with flawless military precision. "Thank you, General Vance. I'm ready."
"Wait!" Arthur shouted, taking an aggressive step forward. "Kate! Kathryn! Look at me!"
Kate paused and slowly turned her head. Her eyes were completely devoid of malice, anger, or hatred—there was only a terrifying, cool detachment.
"Mr. Mercer," Kate said, her voice carrying through the crisp Washington air with steady command. "You told me five minutes ago to pretend I didn't know you, not to speak to you, and under no circumstances to humiliate you today. I intend to honor your request. Enjoy your donor tour."
"Kate, wait! The Mercer Defense Tech contract—we need to present our software to the Joint Chiefs!" Arthur pleaded, his face turning a blotchy red as Secret Service agents quietly moved in to block him from following her.

"The review panel is at two o'clock," Kate said calmly. "And as Vice Chief of Staff, I happen to be presiding over it. Good day, Arthur."
With that, General Kathryn Mercer turned her back on her father and walked through the heavy oak doors of the East Gate, flanked by four-star brass and Secret Service guards, leaving the billionaire completely stunned in the White House dust.
