Chapter 2 - The Heartbeat in the Storm
"Clear!" I shouted, placing the defibrillator paddles against Arthur’s bare, sunken chest.
The electric shock lifted the old man’s body off the mattress. The monitor blipped, showed chaotic jagged lines, and flattened right back into an ominous, steady tone.
"No rhythm! Resume chest compressions!" I ordered, immediately interlocking my fingers over Arthur’s sternum.
I locked my elbows and threw the entire weight of my upper body into rhythm. One, two, three, four.
*Crack.*
The sound of brittle cartilage giving way beneath my palms made Olivia gag in the corner, but I didn't slow down. When you’re saving a life, broken ribs are a luxury of the living.
"Push epinephrine now!" I commanded the nurse. "Charge to three hundred!"
Behind me, I could hear Olivia’s hysterical sobbing. "She’s killing him! Alexander, look at her, she’s cracking his chest! She’s not his doctor, call security! Stop her!"
"Shut your mouth, Olivia," Alexander’s voice cut through the alarm bells like a steel blade. It was low, guttural, and carried an absolute finality that silenced the room. "If you say one more word, I will have security throw you out of the window."
"Three hundred charged!" the resident shouted.
"Everyone off! Clear!"
I pressed the paddles down. The second discharge coursed through Arthur’s frame.
For three agonized seconds, the monitor showed a flat, dead line. My sweat dripped onto Arthur’s hospital gown. I reached for his neck, pressing deep into the carotid groove.
*Thump.*
A faint flutter tapped against my fingertips.
*Beep... beep... beep... beep.*
The chaotic squawk of the monitor smoothed out into a sinus bradycardia, climbing steadily toward sixty-eight beats per minute. A ragged breath wheezed through Arthur’s lips. Color began creeping back into his gray cheeks.
"Rhythm restored," I exhaled, stepping back, wiping the sweat from my forehead with the back of my forearm. My hands were steady, but my pulse was racing. "Intubate him immediately. Set the ventilator to assist-control. Get a twelve-lead ECG, draw cardiac enzymes, and call Dr. Vance in interventional cardiology. His left anterior descending artery is likely occluded. He needs an emergency cath lab now."
"Right away, Dr. Bennett," the resident said, looking at me with deep professional reverence.
The medical team swarmed the bed, securing the airway and wheeling Arthur toward the intensive care unit.
The door swung shut behind them.
Silence descended upon Room 412 once more.
I turned around, leaning back against the metal sink to catch my breath. My silk blouse was rumpled, my dark hair had slipped out of its neat hairpin, and my chest heaved.
Standing by the window, Leo stood motionless. He wasn't crying, though his eyes were wide with a mix of shock and immense pride. He walked over to me, handed me my jacket, and softly said, "You saved him, Mom."
"He’s tough, Leo," I murmured, smoothing my hand over my son’s hair. "Your grandfather is very tough."
Alexander was staring at us. His eyes were dark, haunted, and brimming with unspilled tears. He took a slow step toward Leo, his hand slightly raised as if he wanted to reach out, yet feared that touching the boy might shatter the reality in front of him.
"You have my mother’s chin," Alexander said softly, his voice cracking. "And my father’s hands. Look at your fingers... long, musician’s hands. Arthur used to play the cello before the arthritis took hold."
Leo looked down at his own fingers, then slowly back at Alexander. "My mom taught me to play the piano. She said it helped develop hand-eye coordination for surgery."
A choked sob caught in Alexander’s throat. "She did that... all by herself."
"Alexander!"
Olivia tried to step between them, her designer trench coat swishing as she attempted to reassert herself. "You can't honestly believe this farce! Arthur was having a cardiac episode, and she staged that hero act to make you indebted to her! And what about that paper? Anyone can fabricate a bank statement! I’ve been by your side for twelve years, Alexander! We’re getting married in three months! Our families share billions in joint ventures! Are you going to throw that away for a ghost and a bastard?!"
The word *bastard* had barely left Olivia’s mouth when Alexander moved.
He didn't strike her. Alexander Moretti was many things, but he never laid a hand on a woman. Instead, he closed the distance between them with such predatory speed that Olivia fell back against the wall, trapped by the sheer aura of violence radiating from him.
"Say that word again," Alexander whispered, his face inches from hers. The veins in his neck were bulging. "Say that word about my flesh and blood one more time, Olivia, and I swear to you, I will dismantle the Hayes Corporation brick by brick before the sun sets today."
"Alexander..." she whimpered, her arrogance finally crumbling into sheer panic.
Alexander pulled out his cell phone and pressed a single speed-dial button. He put it on speaker.
"Julian," Alexander said calmly into the phone.
The brisk, professional voice of Julian Moretti, Alexander’s chief legal counsel and head of corporate security, answered on the first ring. "Yes, Alexander. How is Arthur?"
"Arthur is alive, thanks to Claire," Alexander replied, his eyes never leaving Olivia’s terrified face. "Listen to me very carefully, Julian. I want every asset, account, and security clearance associated with Olivia Hayes frozen immediately. Call the district attorney’s office and report nine million dollars in systematic grand larceny and wire fraud from the Moretti Family Trust over the last fifteen years. Hand over the Aegis Holdings paper trail."
"Alexander, no! You can't do this!" Olivia screamed, reaching for the phone.
Alexander caught her wrist in mid-air, his grip like an iron shackle. He didn't squeeze hard enough to bruise, but she couldn't move an inch.
"And Julian?" Alexander continued into the phone.
"Sir?"
"Revoke her security pass to the Moretti Global Tower. Have two armed guards escort her to her apartment, supervise her while she packs her personal clothing, and take back the keys to the penthouse. If she contacts any member of the press, trigger the non-disclosure breach clause that strips her family of their preferred supplier shares."
"Understood, Alexander. Moving now."
The call clicked off.
Alexander released her wrist as if he had touched poison. "Get out of my sight, Olivia. If you ever come within a hundred yards of Claire or my son again, prison will be the safest place you could possibly find yourself."
Olivia stared at him, her chest heaving, realizing that twelve years of calculated manipulation, social climbing, and deceit had evaporated in under twenty minutes. She glared at me, pure venom burning in her eyes.
"You think you’ve won, Claire?" she spat, adjusting her jacket with trembling fingers. "You think you can just stroll back into high society after playing poor in Boston? My father sits on the governor’s financial board. The Hayes family will not take this quietly."
"Olivia," I said, meeting her venomous glare with the absolute chill of an iceberg. "I’ve spent fifteen years cracking chests, stopping hemorrhages, and saving children’s lives while you spent fifteen years spending money you stole from a single mother. You don't scare me. Now walk out that door before I have hospital security physically remove you as a biohazard."
With a choked gasp of rage and humiliation, Olivia spun on her heels and stormed out of the private room, the furious clatter of her heels fading down the polished corridor.
The room fell quiet once more.
Alexander stood with his back to us for a long moment, his shoulders trembling. When he finally turned around, the formidable billionaire CEO looked completely broken.
He looked at Leo, then at me.

"Claire," he whispered, tears finally escaping his eyes and tracing down his sharply sculpted cheekbones. "What have I done?"
