Chapter 20 - The Midnight Ultimatum
Daniel was dragged out of the conservatory, wailing like an abandoned child, his heels dragging against the marble floor until the front heavy doors slammed shut behind him.
The room fell into an uneasy quiet. Two federal agents stood behind Julian's wheelchair, holding him in place as a paramedic team arrived to oversee the medical transport of the dying patriarch under federal custody.
Sarah stepped up beside me, handing me a steaming cup of coffee she had grabbed from the FBI support vehicle. "It’s over, Natalie. The Swiss magistrate just issued an emergency clearance. Chloe and Oliver are completely scrubbed from the Geneva investigation. Their trust funds are fully protected under the court order."
I took a sip of the coffee, letting the heat thaw the cold dread that had gripped me for days. Leo Vance was safe in my custody. Daniel was facing decades in federal prison. Julian’s rail monopoly was shattered under DOJ oversight.
I looked down at Julian Vance, who was glaring up at me from his wheelchair. His breathing had grown shallower, but the malice in his gray eyes was burning with a frantic, demonic intensity.
"You think this is the end of the board, Natalie?" Julian rasped, his voice dropping to a sinister, guttural whisper as the paramedics strapped a blood pressure cuff to his arm.
"It is for you, Julian," I replied, standing tall over him. "You will die in a prison infirmary, surrounded by sterile white walls and guards who don't care what your last name is."
Julian let out a sickening, bubbling laugh that made the paramedics pause.
"Check the time, Mrs. Reed," Julian wheezed, his yellowed teeth bared in a grotesque grin. "It is eleven forty-five PM. The midnight transfer protocol... Daniel didn't execute it. I did. Three days ago."
My blood went cold instantly. Sarah froze beside me.
"What transfer protocol?" I demanded, gripping the edge of the marble table.
"You thought the Geneva account was for weapons?" Julian whispered, his eyes gleaming with lethal amusement. "That was just the distraction to keep your pet auditor busy. Daniel didn't know anything. The real cargo... it wasn't munitions. It was a hostile liquidation clause built into the original family charter. If the head of the Vance family is placed under custodial arrest... forty percent of Continental Rail’s toxic chemical freight lines are automatically routed through residential Chicago at midnight, under automated emergency override. To clear the tracks for liquidation."
My heart stopped beating. "What are you talking about?"
May you like
Julian’s grin widened into a mask of pure madness. "The train yards on the South Side. The rail spur that runs less than five hundred yards from your children's safehouse in Oak Park. Train 404 is already moving, Natalie. And nobody on earth has the manual brake code except me."
Before I could scream, the lights across the entire estate blinked once, twice—and plunged into pitch-black darkness as an emergency air raid siren began to wail across the distant Chicago skyline.
