Chapter 13 - The Custody Ambush at the Circuit Court

Victoria collapsed onto her knees in the snow, ten feet from where her father stood. She was trembling so violently that her breath came in ragged, wheezing gasps. She looked nothing like the polished, cruel mistress who had taunted me over the phone from Aspen just twenty-four hours earlier. She looked like a woman who had seen the executioner’s block and was clawing for any sliver of mercy.

Julian did not even turn to look down at her. He merely gripped his cane tighter. "Get up, Victoria. You smell of cheap gin and failure."

"You set Daniel up!" Victoria sobbed, pointing a shaking, gloved finger at her father’s back. "You gave him the authorization codes for the offshore trust! You told him that if he pledged Leo’s trust assets to the Cayman credit line, you would sign off on his restructuring! You knew the federal prosecutors were watching that account! You used Daniel to draw the heat away from your own tax evasion!"

I stood frozen on the tarmac, holding Leo tighter. The pieces clicked into place with horrifying clarity.

Daniel had thought he was a mastermind. He had shoved me against our dining table, threatened to ruin my life, and stolen our children's three-million-dollar fund because he believed he was playing in the big leagues with Julian Vance. But Daniel was never a player; he was the bait. Julian had fed Daniel the rope to hang himself, orchestrating the entire financial collapse so that Daniel would end up in federal prison—leaving Leo entirely vulnerable to an uncontested family conservatorship.

"Victoria," Julian said, his voice dropping to a lethally calm register. "You have signed your own disinheritance. Walk away now, or I will ensure you spend the next ten years in federal prison alongside your pathetic lover."

"The order isn't valid, Father!" Victoria yelled, looking up at me with eyes full of manic desperation. "Natalie! Listen to me! He bribed Judge Callahan in Cook County! Callahan didn't have the jurisdiction! The Vance Indenture is domiciled in the Federal District of Northern Illinois under admiralty and maritime charter! He can’t enforce a state probate order on an airstrip that sits on federal ordnance land!"

Marcus leaned toward my ear instantly. "She’s right. This runway is part of the former Kingsbury Ordnance Depot. It’s federal reserve property under the control of the Department of Defense. State police have no authority here."

Julian turned his head slowly, his jaw set like an iron vice. "Take the boy," he commanded his four men.

"Step forward and you take a bullet," Marcus barked, his sidearm clearing his holster in a fluid, lethal motion that caused the four men to halt instantly. "Federal property. I am a licensed federal protective agent under active contract with the court-appointed trustee. Any step toward this minor is classified as an assault on a federal ward."

The standoff hung on the edge of a knife. The only sound was the howling wind and Leo’s soft, terrified crying against my neck.

"You cannot stay on this runway forever, Natalie," Julian whispered, his eyes boring into mine with pure venom. "Dawn is breaking. In three hours, the federal court in Chicago opens. We will see whose name carries more weight before a federal magistrate."

"I’ll meet you there, Julian," I said, my voice cutting through the frost like a diamond blade. "And bring your best lawyers. Because by 9:00 AM, the entire world is going to find out what happened to Julianne."

Without waiting for his answer, Marcus signaled our ground transport—two armored suburbans that had silently rolled into the far side of the airstrip, arranged by Marcus’s Chicago network.

Within sixty seconds, Marcus, Victoria, Leo, and I were inside the reinforced vehicle, the doors locked and the engines roaring as we broke through the secondary perimeter gate, heading directly onto Interstate 80 toward downtown Chicago.

Victoria sat across from me in the leather bench seat, clutching a bottle of water with trembling hands. Her eyes were bloodshot, her face pale as a corpse.

"Why did you come, Victoria?" I asked, looking at her without an ounce of pity, but with deadly focus. "You hated me. You helped Daniel steal my children's college fund."

Victoria let out a bitter, broken laugh. "You think I cared about your three million dollars? Daniel was supposed to take me to Singapore. He promised me we would take Leo, cash out the Cayman bond, and start over where my father couldn't reach us. But Daniel is a coward. When the FBI closed in, he tried to offer *me* to the prosecutors as the mastermind."

She leaned forward, her eyes wild. "My father doesn't want Leo because he loves him, Natalie. My father is dying. He has stage-four pancreatic carcinoma. The trust indenture states that if the patriarch dies without a direct, living male heir residing on Vance ancestral land, eighty percent of the family fortune reverts to a public charitable trust established by my grandmother. Leo is the only living male heir. If my father doesn't have physical custody of Leo by noon today, Julian Vance dies a pauper."

I stared at her, the final piece of the labyrinth falling into place.

"And what happens to Leo once your father gets custody?" I asked.

Victoria’s voice dropped to a terrifying whisper. "Leo becomes an asset locked in a trust. And my father has already drafted a will naming a corporate board as Leo's permanent guardian. That little boy will never see daylight, Natalie. He will be raised by attorneys and corporate handlers until he turns twenty-five, just to keep the dividends flowing to the board."

I looked down at the sleeping boy in my lap, feeling the soft warmth of his cheek against my palm.

"Not while I'm breathing," I said.
