Chapter 15 - The Coldest Reunion
The air inside Blackwood Ridge was recirculated, cold, and smelled of ozone and damp slate.
We ascended the maintenance ladder into Sub-Level Three, stepping into a labyrinth of polished steel corridors bathed in sterile white LED lighting. The walls hummed with the massive electrical draw of supercomputers executing the Morningstar algorithms.
Every corner was guarded by Iron Aegis contractors, but they weren't expecting ghosts to walk up from the sewer drains.
Danny moved like a specter, his suppressed submachine gun eliminating two sentries at the primary security junction before they could raise their comms. Arthur took their keycards, his face hardened into stone as he led us toward the central command rotunda.
"The main control terminal is behind those armored blast doors," Arthur whispered, pointing down a glass-paneled observation bridge overlooking a massive subterranean server farm. "That's where the Morningstar master console is located."
"Look," Danny whispered, pointing through the ballistic glass.
Inside the rotunda, surrounded by dozens of technicians frantically typing away at terminal banks, stood Eleanor Vance.
She held a titanium briefcase handcuffed to her wrist—the mobile tactical authorization terminal for the nuclear command grid. On the massive display wall behind her, a digital countdown clock ticked backward:
**MORNINGSTAR EXECUTION: 00:04:15**
Four minutes and fifteen seconds until the collapse of the free world.
"Breaching charges on the door hinges," I ordered Danny. "Dad, the moment that door blows, you secure the console terminal and let Evelyn patch in. I’ll take Eleanor."
"Maya..." Arthur grabbed my forearm, his grip desperate, his eyes shining with unshed tears. "If it comes down to it... don't hesitate. She isn't the woman I married. She's a monster who stole our lives. Put her down."
"I know what to do, Dad," I said softly.
Danny set the linear shape charges against the blast door frame. "Charges set. In three... two... one..."
*BOOM!*
The heavy steel door blew inward in a spray of fire and twisted metal. We stormed into the rotunda, weapons blazing.
Danny laid down suppressive fire on the armed guards flanking the platform, dropping three men in seconds. Arthur sprinted toward the main terminal, slamming a technician against the wall and jamming Evelyn’s override flash drive into the primary server slot.
"Evelyn, you're in! Kill the sequence!" Arthur yelled into his comms.
I didn't look at the screens. My rifle was locked onto Eleanor Vance.
Her security detail was dead on the floor around her, but Eleanor hadn't even flinched. She hadn't drawn a weapon. She stood calmly on the elevated observation deck, brushing a speck of drywall dust from the shoulder of her designer suit, looking at me with the chilling pride of a mother admiring her child's high school graduation.
"Impressive breach, Major Vance," Eleanor said, her voice amplified through the command room's intercom. "You have your father’s tactical timing. But as usual, Arthur’s strategic vision is thirty years out of date."
"Step away from the console and drop the briefcase, Eleanor!" I shouted, my rifle sights trained dead center on her forehead. "It's over! We have the terminal! Evelyn is overriding the Morningstar protocol!"
Eleanor laughed. It was a cold, melodic, genuinely amused sound.
"Do you really think I would build the culmination of my life’s work with a single point of failure?" she asked softly.
She lifted her left hand. Between her slender fingers was a small, sleek transmitter with a pulsing red LED indicator.
"What is that?" Arthur yelled from the console, his fingers freezing over the keyboard.
"A dead-man biometric pressure switch, my love," Eleanor said, looking down at Arthur with pure venom. "Evelyn cannot stop the upload because the upload isn't routed through the servers anymore. It's routed through my heart rate. If my pulse stops, or if I release this switch, Morningstar instantly executes the catastrophic purge sequence across all twelve naval fleets."
She looked back at me, taking a slow, deliberate step toward the edge of the platform.
"You came here to kill me, Maya," Eleanor challenged, her voice dropping to a seductive whisper. "You came here to prove that you are a loyal soldier. So shoot me. Pull the trigger. Kill your mother, and watch the world burn in my funeral pyre."
I stood frozen, the crosshairs steady over her heart, my finger tight against the cold metal of the trigger. Behind her, the massive digital clock ticked down into the final two minutes.

Arthur stepped out from the console, his weapon drawn, his face white with terror as he realized the impossible trap his wife had laid for their daughter.
"Maya..." Arthur breathed, his voice cracking. "Don't..."
