Chapter 13 - The Architect’s Manifesto

The silence in the barn was so suffocating that the only sound was the patter of freezing rain against the metal roof.

"Eleanor..." Arthur dragged himself upright against the workbench, his fingers digging into the rotting wood. "You monster. What have you done?"

"I did what you were too cowardly to do, Arthur," Eleanor replied smoothly, her voice rich, melodic, and completely devoid of human warmth. "I looked at the system you worshipped and saw it for what it truly was. A rotting, inefficient bureaucracy run by politicians who send eighteen-year-olds to die for oil and campaign donations. You spent your life serving the machine. I decided to rewrite its code."

"You murdered our soldiers in Syria!" I yelled, stepping directly in front of the laptop camera, my fists clenched so hard my knuckles turned white. "You framed me! You had your own brother Robert killed like a dog when he served his purpose! Did you ever care about us, or were we just chess pieces on your board?"

Eleanor tilted her head, studying my face with an analytical, detached fascination. "I never intended for Robert to die, Maya. His execution was the result of your unfortunate stubbornness. As for Syria... sacrifices are the currency of real history. You cannot build a new world order without breaking the foundations of the old one."

"You're insane," Danny spat, stepping beside me.

"I am pragmatic, Sergeant Hayes," Eleanor countered coldly. "For twenty years, the Iron Aegis has pruned the rot from behind the scenes. We eliminated commanders who lacked vision, redirected defense contracts, and constructed an unassailable shadow government. Tomorrow, Morningstar will activate. The automated defense grid will purge the Joint Chiefs, neutralize the corrupted political class, and place supreme command where it belongs: in the hands of those who actually understand power."

She leaned forward, her gray eyes locking onto mine with hypnotic intensity.

"Maya, you are my blood. You have my intellect, my lethal instincts, and Arthur’s stubborn resilience. Robert was a blunt instrument. Sterling was a greedy fool. But you... you survived everything I threw at you. Damascus, the court-martial, the manhunts. You are the only person alive worthy of inheriting what I have built."

"I would rather put a bullet between your eyes," I said, my voice dropping to a deadly, unwavering whisper.

Eleanor’s smile faded, replaced by an expression of cold disappointment. "How predictable. You cling to your father’s pathetic, rusted notions of honor. A code of ethics designed by losers to justify their defeats."

She paused, tapping a key on her unseen console.

"I gave you a choice, Maya. Since you choose to die in the dirt with your broken father, I will let the machine consume you both. Look at the news."

Evelyn gasped, pulling up a live satellite broadcast on her secondary monitor.

The screen flashed red with a breaking news banner: **BREAKING NEWS: JOINT CHIEFS DECLARE GENERAL ARTHUR VANCE AND DISGRACED MAJOR MAYA VANCE DOMESTIC TERRORISTS IN ATTEMPTED FCC COUP. SHOOT-ON-SIGHT ORDERS ISSUED NATIONWIDE.**

Pictures of my father and me—our faces captured during the raid on the relay bunker—plastered the national news channels.

"The FBI, Homeland Security, and the entirety of US Special Operations Command are hunting you as we speak," Eleanor said, her voice dropping into a chilling finality. "You have no allies. You have no safe haven. And when Morningstar executes tomorrow night, history will record that General Vance and his traitor daughter burned the world down, leaving the Iron Aegis to rise from the ashes and save what remained."

"Eleanor, wait!" Arthur choked out, reaching toward the screen.

"Goodbye, Arthur," she whispered. "You should have stayed in Damascus."

May you like

The screen went black.
