Chapter 19 - The High Table's Retribution

Emily stopped two paces from Raymond DuPont and Beatrice Sterling. Neither mercenary dared to pull the trigger; they knew that a corpse could not pass a live biometric capillary scan.

"You wanted my DNA, DuPont?" Emily said calmly. "You wanted the key that opens Project Lazarus?"

"Step to the console, girl," Beatrice snapped, her hands shaking as she clutched her fur coat. "Do as you're told, just like you always did!"

Emily turned her head and met Beatrice’s eyes. The sheer, glacial authority in Emily’s gaze caused Beatrice to choke on her own breath and stumble back half a step.

"I am Eleanor Cross’s blood," Emily said, her voice echoing like a battle cry through the ancient hall. "I am Julian Cross’s heir. I do not take orders from a bankrupt socialite who lived on stolen silver."

Emily reached out and slammed her right palm down onto the illuminated sapphire glass of the biometric terminal.

A blinding pulse of cerulean light flared outward from the scanner, racing across the terminal console and shooting into the perimeter walls through ribbons of fiber-optic channels.

A robotic, synthesized voice reverberated through the vault’s acoustic architecture:

*Biological signature confirmed: Emily Cross. Lineage verified: Cross-Vanguard Primary Sovereign. Failsafe activated.*

DuPont’s face split into a triumphant, grotesque grin. "Finally! The master assets are ours!" He lunged toward the master console, pulling out an encrypted drive to initiate the transfer.

*Warning,* the automated voice announced, calm and implacable. *Project Lazarus is not an asset vault. Project Lazarus is an automated terminal liquidation virus.*

DuPont froze, his hand trembling mid-air. "What did you say?"

*Authorization code recognized: Cross Protocol Alpha,* the system continued. *Executing complete, irreversible liquidation of all assets tied to the eight founding consortium nodes. Dispersing thirty-eight trillion dollars in offshore reserves to international maritime, human rights, and environmental public trusts. Encrypted ledger records broadcasted to international criminal courts, Interpol, and seven hundred global press outlets.*

On the massive digital wall behind the circular vault door, millions of lines of code began cascading like a roaring green waterfall.

"No!" DuPont screamed, slamming his fists against the console. "Cancel the protocol! Abort! Abort!"

*Override denied,* the computer replied. *Total digital erasure will complete in three minutes.*

Suddenly, the encrypted satellite phones in the pockets of DuPont, Beatrice, and the council members began vibrating frantically in unison. Beatrice pulled out her phone with trembling fingers. The screen flashed bright red with emergency notifications from the Sterling family’s Swiss accounts:

*ACCOUNT FROZEN: ASSETS LIQUIDATED BY JUDICIAL WARRANT.*

*ACCOUNT FROZEN: ASSETS LIQUIDATED BY JUDICIAL WARRANT.*

*ARREST WARRANT ISSUED: BEATRICE STERLING. JURISDICTION: INTERNATIONAL CRIMINAL POLICE ORGANIZATION.*

"My money..." Beatrice whimpered, dropping her phone onto the stone floor where the glass shattered into a spiderweb pattern. "Richard... our money! Everything is gone! Everything is gone!"

Richard fell to his knees on the cold obsidian, clutching his head, hyperventilating as the reality of utter, catastrophic ruin crashed down upon him. The family name, the Manhattan brownstones, the private jets, the high-society status—erased from existence in less than sixty seconds.

DuPont turned around slowly, his face white with feral rage. He reached inside his coat and drew a sleek silver revolver, aiming it directly at Emily’s heart.

"If I am ruined," DuPont snarled, his finger tightening on the trigger, "you will not live to celebrate it!"
