Chapter 14 - The Midnight Reckoning

The heavy clatter of federal transport vans echoed outside the mansion’s circular driveway. Flashing red and blue lights illuminated the falling snow, painting the white lawn in strokes of crimson and sapphire.

Special agents from the FBI’s Corporate Fraud Task Force and the Department of Justice filed into the estate, their badges flashing under the chandelier lights as they took custody of the Sterling family one by one.

Victor was handcuffed first, his expensive tailored suit rumpled and stained with spilled wine. As the cuffs clicked around his wrists, he looked at Julian Cross with hollow, beaten eyes.

"You won't survive what's coming, Julian," Victor rasped, his voice venomous despite his trembling knees. "You think this was just us? You think Beatrice and I had the power to orchestrate an offshore extraction like Route 9? We answered to people who own governments, old man!"

"Then you can share your grievances with the federal grand jury in the Southern District of New York," Julian replied without batting an eye. "Lead him out."

Next came Beatrice. The proud matriarch who had spent the last two years treating Emily like a nameless kitchen servant refused to walk. Two federal agents had to drag her across the threshold, her designer heels scraping against the stone steps, screaming curses into the freezing night until the heavy van doors slammed shut, cutting off her screeching forever.

Richard was led out last. As he reached the front doors, he turned back, his face streaked with tears, looking desperately at Emily.

"Emily... please... what am I supposed to do?!" he sobbed.

Emily stood between me and our mother, her arm linked tightly with mine. She didn't look away, nor did she flinch.

"You can serve your time, Richard," Emily said, her voice ringing clear and steady in the quiet foyer. "And while you’re eating prison slop off plastic trays, remember the Christmas dinner you made me cook for you."

The agents led him out into the snow, and the heavy doors closed.

The silence that settled over the grand estate was absolute. The chaos, the shouting, the terror—it all vanished into the freezing winter wind.

Julian turned slowly to face us. The ancient titan looked exhausted, the lines on his weathered face cut deep by years of hiding in shadows and carrying the burden of keeping his family alive from behind a fortress of lies.

"It is over," Julian whispered softly. "The house of Sterling is broken."

"Not entirely, Father," Eleanor said, stepping forward. Her expression was solemn as she pulled a dark satellite communicator from her handbag. "Victor was right about one thing. The Vanguard Consortium didn't just back the Sterlings out of financial interest. They wanted the biological research patents registered under Emily’s trust."

Emily blinked, turning to her mother. "What patents? Mother, I’m an art restorer. I don't know anything about biological patents!"

"Your father did," Eleanor said softly, placing a warm hand on Emily’s cheek. "Before he died, he placed the Cross Institute’s groundbreaking genetic therapeutics under a dormant irrevocable trust in your name. That is why they wanted you dead, Emily. With you gone, Richard would have inherited the legal rights to sell those patents to foreign defense contractors."

I felt a cold shiver trace my spine. "So the Sterlings were just the hunting dogs."

May you like

"Yes," Eleanor nodded, her eyes hardening once more. "And the hunters are still out there."
