Chapter 3 - The Price of Revenge

The interior of the Maybach was an insulated cocoon of fragrant leather and ambient amber lighting. The rain had begun to fall over Manhattan, streaking the heavily tinted bulletproof windows with distorted ribbons of neon.

Gabriel sat across from me in the facing seat, a crystal tumbler of neat scotch resting easily in his large hand. He had discarded his bowtie, the top two buttons of his crisp white dress shirt unfastened, revealing the powerful cords of his neck.

A thick manila folder rested on the burl-wood console between us.

"Open it," he commanded softly.

My hands shook slightly as I reached out from beneath the massive folds of his jacket. The folder was labeled: *PROJECT PHOENIX: COLLINS / THORNE.*

Inside were twenty pages of dense, single-spaced legal text prepared by the premier corporate law firm in the country. But the executive summary on the first page was what made my eyes widen until they burned.

*Term: 365 Days.*

*Compensation: $10,000,000 USD upon completion, with a $1,000,000 immediate signing bonus.*

*Medical Care: All expenses for Evelyn Collins covered in perpetuity at St. Jude Pavilion, regardless of contract outcome.*

*Role: Exclusive fiancée and public companion to Gabriel Thorne.*

*Stipulation: Absolute obedience to public narrative. Zero physical intimacy required unless mutually consented. Total non-disclosure.*

I stared at the number. Ten million dollars.

It was an amount of money that didn't just solve problems; it erased generations of suffering. It was enough to wipe out Damian’s entire existence from my memory.

"Why?" I asked, looking up from the paper to meet his piercing gray gaze. "You could have any woman in the city. You could have real heiresses. Women who know which fork to use, women who bring banking alliances, women who didn't spend the last four years scrubbing grease traps to pay for an ungrateful man’s law degree."

Gabriel took a slow sip of his scotch, his eyes never leaving mine. "Heiresses have families, Ava. Families have agendas, boards of directors, and shares they want to leverage against my empire."

He leaned forward, resting his forearms on his knees, closing the distance between us until I could feel the radiant heat of his body.

"My grandfather’s will contains an archaic morality clause," he explained, his voice low and devoid of sentiment. "To assume full voting control of Thorne Holdings on my thirty-second birthday next month, I must be betrothed to a woman of 'sound character, untouched by corporate conflict.' The board, led by my uncle Marcus, is currently trying to force me to marry Victoria Langford’s cousin to swallow my voting bloc."

"So you used me to kill their deal," I realized, the pieces falling into place with terrifying clarity.

"I used you because you have no corporate ties, you despise the Langford social circle, and you possess a very specific, stubborn resilience that I find... tolerable," Gabriel said bluntly. "You kept an ungrateful boy fed for four years on sixty-hour work weeks without ever asking for a handout. You have loyalty, Ava. The people in my world would sell their own mothers for a basis point."

"And what happens to Damian?" The question slipped out before I could stop it.

A cold, lethal smile touched the corners of Gabriel’s lips. It was the smile of a predator watching an animal walk into an iron snare.

"Damian Cross built his career by attaching himself to the Langford name," Gabriel whispered. "Tomorrow, the financial press will report that his flagship merger collapsed because he insulted the future Mrs. Thorne at an open gala. His partners will abandon him. His debt will be called in. And Victoria Langford will realize that her shiny new pet is an expensive liability."

He leaned back, sliding a heavy gold Montblanc pen across the table toward me.

"Sign the contract, Ava. Give me twelve months of your life, and I will give you your grandmother’s health, financial freedom, and the complete, utter destruction of the man who broke you."
