Chapter 19 - The Final Trap
Before I could process the seismic revelation, the heavy doors of the Greenwich estate downstairs rattled with a sudden, violent banging, followed by the muffled shouting of security personnel.
Gabriel’s demeanor transformed instantly. The vulnerable man vanished, replaced in a heartbeat by the cold, lethal predator.
"Stay here," he ordered, pulling a dark cashmere sweater over his head and reaching into the nightstand for a sleek, matte-black sidearm.
"Gabriel, what is it?" I asked, following him toward the landing of the grand staircase.
Below, in the marble foyer, the estate’s double doors had been forced open. Flanked by two uniformed state troopers, Richard Langford stood in the entrance, his face contorted in a mask of apoplectic fury, accompanied by a disheveled, wild-eyed Victoria.
And behind them, in handcuffs, was Damian Cross.
"Where is he?!" Richard Langford bellowed, his voice echoing up the vaulted ceilings. "Where is Thorne?!"
Gabriel walked calmly to the top of the grand staircase, resting his hands casually on the carved banister, looking down at the intrusion as if observing stray dogs in his garden. I stepped up beside him, wrapping the silk robe tightly around myself.
"Richard," Gabriel greeted him coldly. "Breaking and entering onto private property is a felony in Connecticut. Even for a failing real estate mogul."
"You set us up!" Victoria shrieked, pointing a manicured finger up at Gabriel, her makeup smeared with tears. "You orchestrated the entire fraud audit! The police raided our estate an hour ago—they found five million dollars of embezzled Thorne subsidiary funds in Damian’s offshore accounts!"
My eyes widened as I looked down at Damian.
Damian looked like a broken animal. His designer suit was torn, his face pale and sunken, his eyes darting frantically between Gabriel and me.
"Ava!" Damian screamed, straining against the troopers' grip. "Tell them! Tell them Gabriel planted those accounts! He used your old banking passwords from Columbia to route the money into my name! He set me up to take the fall for his tax shelters!"
A chilling realization washed over the foyer.
Marcus Thorne stepped out of the study below, a victorious smirk spreading across his hawkish face. "Well, Gabriel. It seems your little Cinderella isn't just a laundress. She’s your accomplice in corporate espionage. The state police have a warrant for her arrest."
One of the troopers stepped toward the stairs. "Ava Collins, step down with your hands visible."
My heart plummeted into my stomach.
They weren't trying to save Damian. Marcus and the Langfords had coordinated this final, desperate strike to frame me for Gabriel’s offshore transactions, using Damian’s old access to destroy my credibility and force Gabriel to resign before the board vote at midnight.
"Don't move, Ava," Gabriel commanded softly.
He didn't look down at the troopers. He looked directly at Marcus.
"You really should check your secure terminal before you summon the state police, Uncle Marcus," Gabriel said smoothly, pulling his phone from his pocket and tapping the screen twice.
Downstairs, the lead state trooper’s radio crackled loudly.
"Captain," a dispatcher’s voice boomed through the receiver, clear and frantic. "Stand down immediately. The warrant for Collins is rescinded by the Attorney General’s office. Repeat: stand down."
Richard Langford froze. "What?!"
Gabriel descended the grand staircase slowly, each step ringing like a death knell in the cavernous foyer.
"Did you really think," Gabriel whispered, stopping three steps from the bottom, towering over the intruders, "that I didn't know Damian was using Ava’s old credentials to skim from the Langford foundation for the past two years?"
Gabriel looked directly at Damian, whose knees buckled beneath him.
"You didn't frame me, Damian," Gabriel said, his voice dripping with pure, unadulterated venom. "I merely handed the FBI the unedited server logs from your private laptop. Every dollar you stole from the Langfords to buy Victoria’s engagement ring came from their own charity accounts."
Victoria gasped, staggering back from Damian as if he were covered in plague. "You... you stole from my family?!"
"Victoria, no! It was for us!" Damian sobbed, collapsing onto the marble floor. "I had to show your father I had capital!"
"Get him out of my sight," Richard Langford whispered, his face dead and hollow as the realization of his family’s total ruin washed over him.

The troopers hauled Damian away, kicking and screaming my name into the cold morning air, his pathetic pleas dying out as the doors slammed shut behind him.
