Chapter 20 - The Unfinished War & A Father's Vow

That evening, a cool autumn breeze swept through the manicured gardens of the estate.

The boys were exhausted, sleeping soundly in their new shared bedroom upstairs, each clutching their stuffed wolves, under the watchful protection of two trusted guards stationed outside their door.

I stood on the stone balcony overlooking the Chicago skyline. The city was calm. The docks were running efficiently, the syndicate capos were loyal, and the Valenti threat had been entirely eradicated.

Marco walked onto the balcony, his footsteps silent on the flagstones.

"Boss," he said, handing me a sealed wax envelope that had just arrived via a private diplomatic courier from Geneva.

"What is this?"

"It was retrieved from Sofia's private Swiss safety deposit box," Marco explained, his face unusually solemn. "The bank only released it today, on the fifth anniversary of her passing, as specified in her final will."

I broke the crimson wax seal, which bore the crest of Sofia’s aristocratic maiden family—the House of Castiglione.

Inside was a single handwritten note from Sofia, accompanied by a heavy brass key and a small silver thumb drive.

I unfolded the paper.

*Alejandro,*

*If you are reading this, you have reclaimed our boys, and Carmine Valenti has paid for his sins. But the snake's head was never in Chicago.*

*Silvio and Valenti were only foot soldiers. The man who funded the poison—the man who demanded the eradication of the Moretti bloodline—sits in New York. He is the Chairman of the High Table, and he believes our family's ancient bloodline carries the secret to the syndicate’s founding vaults.*

*He will come for our sons, Alejandro. Not today. Not tomorrow. But when they come of age.*

*Prepare them. Train them. Love them.*

*Forever your wife,*

*Sofia.*

I stared at the letter, the paper trembling slightly in the cold evening wind.

The war wasn't over.

It had only just begun. The enemies in Chicago had been mere pawns in a global game played by shadow rulers who thought they could dictate the fate of my family.

Marco looked at me, seeing the terrifying, familiar fire ignite within my eyes once again. "Boss? What does it say?"

I carefully folded the letter, slipped the brass key into my pocket, and turned my gaze toward the glittering towers of the city.

"It says we have work to do, Marco."

"Are we mobilizing?"

"Not yet," I replied, looking back toward the brightly lit window upstairs where my four sons slept peacefully under the protection of my name. "First, I have to teach my boys how to ride bicycles tomorrow morning."

I took a deep breath of the cold Chicago air, my heart beating with absolute, unyielding purpose.

"And then... we build an empire that no king, no syndicate, and no army can ever tear down."

I turned away from the balcony and walked back into the warmth of the mansion, locking the doors behind me, ready for whatever the darkness dared to send next.
