Chapter 14 - The Ambush at Lake Geneva
While Chicago's underworld was being purged, the lake house was not as quiet as I had hoped.
Fifty miles north, on the icy shores of Lake Geneva, the mist rolled over the water.
Inside the cabin, Elena was tucking the boys into bed for the third time. Mateo was awake, staring at the window.
"Elena," Mateo whispered, tugging her sleeve.
"Go to sleep, sweet boy. Your papa will be back before dawn."
"The water is making lights," Mateo pointed toward the dark lake.
Elena froze.
She crept toward the heavy curtains and peeked through the sliver of glass.
Three sleek, black tactical Zodiac boats were gliding silently across the glassy surface of the lake, their engines cut, propelled solely by electric trolling motors. Armed men in diving gear were stepping onto the pebble beach, their weapons held at the low ready.
"Julian!" Elena shrieked, racing toward the basement door. "They're here! They found us!"
Dr. Julian Alvarez sprinted up the stairs, an automatic shotgun already racked in his hands. "How many?"
"At least ten! Coming from the water!"
Julian cursed, slamming the security lock on the heavy reinforced front door. "Carmine Valenti’s personal reserve unit. Silvio must have leaked the coordinates before Alejandro caught him."
"What do we do?" Elena cried, gathering the four boys into the reinforced bathroom.
"We hold," Julian said grimly, chambering another shell. "Alejandro is on his way by chopper. We only have to hold for fifteen minutes."

A shower of automatic rifle fire shattered the cabin's lake-facing windows.
