Chapter 13 - The General's Trap
By 0700 the next morning, my desk was buried beneath operational transition reports. But the real storm was waiting on line three of my secure terminal.
"General Carter," the voice on the other end was smooth, gravelly, and dripping with four decades of beltway influence. It was retired Four-Star General Vance Sterling—Eleanor's oldest political patron, a former Vice Chief of Staff, and the current chairman of Sterling Global Defense Systems.
"General Sterling," I answered, keeping my tone strictly professional. "To what do I owe the honor?"
"Emily, my girl," Sterling chuckled softly, though the underlying menace was clear. "I watched your change-of-command ceremony online. Very impressive. Your father would have smiled. But let’s cut through the smoke, shall we? You’ve made your point. You took your pound of flesh from Eleanor and young Julian. The press has had their fun. Now it’s time to close the curtain."
"Close the curtain on an eight-figure federal fraud investigation, General?"
"Close the curtain on an internal family tragedy that threatens to embarrass the Department of Defense," Sterling countered, his voice dropping an octave, razor-sharp. "The Carter Foundation has partnerships with my firm. Important partnerships. Contracts that supply drone telemetry to our forward units in Europe. If the DOJ starts tearing through Eleanor's accounts, legitimate defense programs could be frozen in committee."
"Then those programs were funded by dirty capital, sir."
"Listen to me, Brigadier General Carter," Sterling snapped, abandoning the grandfatherly facade. "You have your star. It looks very shiny on your collar. But stars can be revoked. Nominations can be stalled in the Senate Armed Services Committee indefinitely. You think you're untouchable because you have a brigade? I built the committee that approved your promotion. Back off the foundation. Let Eleanor plead to a minor civil penalty, send Julian abroad for a year, and take your victory."
I sat back in my leather chair, a cold smile crossing my lips. On the console beside my phone, a small red light was blinking.
"General Sterling," I said evenly. "Are you aware that my father appointed a civilian inspector general to supervise all foundation interactions with Sterling Global back in 2018?"
A beat of absolute silence hung on the line.
"What are you talking about?" Sterling muttered.
"I’m looking at the third appendix of my father’s private ledger," I continued, turning the page. "It documents three separate wire transfers totaling twelve million dollars from Eleanor’s foundation directly into your wife’s blind trust in the Caymans. In exchange, Sterling Global awarded subcontracts to shell companies owned entirely by Julian."
Sterling’s breathing became ragged. "Emily... you don't know what you're stepping into."
"I am a combat commander, General Sterling. I never step onto terrain I haven't already mapped. Furthermore, as an active-duty flag officer receiving an unauthorized communication regarding an active criminal investigation, this conversation has been recorded on a classified DOD line."
"You wouldn't dare."
"I don't have to dare, sir," I replied cleanly. "The transcript was forwarded to the Army Inspector General sixty seconds ago. Have a good morning, General."
