Chapter 12 - The Prodigal's Rage
The security gates of Fort Benning were bathed in the harsh white glare of perimeter spotlights as twilight fell. Behind the steel barriers stood Julian. His bespoke Italian suit was rumpled, his hair unwashed, and the golden sheen of privilege that had insulated him his entire life looked peeled away like cheap veneer.
When my staff car pulled up and I stepped out, flanked by two armed military police officers, Julian rushed forward until an MP’s hand stopped him dead in his tracks.
"Emily!" he shouted, his voice cracking with the hysteria of a man who had never been told *no*. "You have to call them off! The federal prosecutors froze my commercial accounts! My partners in New York are pulling out of the hedge fund! Tell the CID this is a family misunderstanding!"
I walked slowly toward the barrier, my boots striking the asphalt with measured, deliberate authority. I did not raise my voice. I did not look at him with anger. I looked at him with the cold appraisal a commander reserves for a failed subordinate.
"There is no misunderstanding, Julian," I said calmly. "You took seventy-four million dollars from Pentagon logistics subcontractors and laundered it through mother’s foundation. You forged military procurement signatures. Did you honestly believe that having the last name Carter made you immune to federal treason statutes?"
"It wasn't me! It was Mother!" Julian pleaded, stepping closer to the chain-link divider, his hands clutching the cold wire. "She handled the ledgers! She told me the money was cleared through her connections in Washington! She said you were just a grunt in uniform who would never look deep enough to see it!"
"And you believed her because it bought your sports cars and your penthouse in Manhattan," I replied, pulling the photocopy of his forged signature from my folder and holding it before his bloodshot eyes. "You signed your name here, Julian. Twelve times."
His eyes widened in terror. The reality of federal penitentiary time, stripped of country club golf courses and private jets, finally pierced his skull.
"Emily... I'm your brother," he whispered, his lip trembling. "Mother is losing her mind at the manor. She’s locked herself in the master suite. She says she’ll ruin you before she ever wears handcuffs. You have to help us. We're your family!"
"Family?" I asked, stepping inches from the fence, my gaze burning into his. "Family doesn't whisper in your ear that you're worthless while you're wearing the uniform of your nation. Family doesn't attempt to court-martial you for crimes they committed themselves. You and Eleanor built your empire on lies. Now you get to live in the rubble."
I turned on my heel.
"General Carter!" Julian screamed behind me, the sound echoing off the guard towers. "Emily! You can't leave us out here! Emily!"
"Sergeant," I told the gate guard without breaking stride. "If he steps past that white line without official authorization, arrest him for trespassing on a federal installation."
May you like
"Understood, General."
