Chapter 8 - The Trap is Sprung

Two weeks later, the final ghost of our past made one last, desperate attempt to drag us back into hell.

The autumn leaves had turned vibrant shades of amber and scarlet, blanketing the long private driveway of the Moretti estate. The guards at the gates no longer wore tactical body armor; they wore tailored dark suits, functioning as executive security rather than soldiers.

I sat in the estate’s sun-drenched conservatory, watching Lily practice writing her alphabet at a low wooden desk. She was thriving. The hollow, haunted look in her hazel eyes had vanished completely, replaced by rosy cheeks, bright laughter, and an endless stream of questions about the world.

A soft buzz from the tablet on the table caught my attention.

It was an encrypted communication alert forwarded directly from Luca’s legal team.

I tapped the screen.

A video file appeared, stamped with an urgent transmission tag from Cook County Jail.

On the screen was Charles Whitmore.

He looked unrecognizable. The sleek, handsome attorney who had sneered at me across the dinner table two weeks ago was completely gone. His face was gaunt, his prison jumpsuit hung off his thinning frame, and a dark purple bruise covered his left eye—a souvenir from his new companions in general population.

*“Hannah,”* Charles’s raspy voice came through the speaker, low and trembling. *“If you’re watching this, my lawyer handed this over to Moretti’s people. You have to listen to me. Donati isn't finished. Marco Donati has a contact inside the US Marshals service. They know Luca is transferring his offshore assets into a blind trust for you and the kid.”*

I leaned closer, my stomach knotting with familiar dread.

*“Donati’s crew is planning to hit the federal transport tomorrow morning when Vanessa and I are moved to the federal penitentiary in Terre Haute,”* Charles stammered, his eyes darting frantically off-camera. *“They’re going to silence us before we can testify against Donati’s shell corporations. But that’s not all. Vanessa gave Donati’s men the location of the safe deposit box where your original birth certificate and Lily’s true medical records are kept. They’re going to use them to forge an international custody claim through an Italian tribunal to drag Lily out of the country!”*

Charles swallowed hard, tears welling in his hollow eyes.

*“Hannah… I know I destroyed your life. I know I’m going to die in a cage. But please… don't let them take her to Italy. Tell Moretti. He has to intercept that transport. It’s the only way to seize the records before Donati burns them.”*

The video cut to static.

My heart hammered against my ribs. I stood up so quickly that my wicker chair scraped loudly against the flagstone floor.

“Mommy? What’s wrong?” Lily asked, looking up from her notebook.

“Nothing, sweetheart,” I said, forcing a calm smile as I smoothed down my skirt. “Mommy just needs to talk to Luca for a minute. Keep working on your letter ‘M’, okay?”

I hurried out of the conservatory and down the long corridor toward Luca’s ground-floor executive office.

When I pushed open the double doors, Luca was already standing behind his massive desk, flanked by Vincenzo and two men in dark suits with federal law enforcement badges clipped to their belts.

Luca looked up, his expression instantly shifting from cold authority to gentle warmth the moment his eyes found mine. “Hannah. You saw the video?”

“Charles contacted your lawyers?” I asked, stepping into the room.

Luca nodded, waving his hand to dismiss the two federal agents, who gave me respectful nods before slipping out through the side doors. Vincenzo remained, leaning against the bookshelf with his arms crossed.

“Charles is terrified,” Luca said, walking around the desk toward me. His arm was out of the sling now, the wound healed to a neat, pink scar beneath his rolled-up shirt sleeves. “He knows Donati’s men will execute him the moment the transport vehicle leaves county jurisdiction.”

“Is it true?” I asked, panic lacing my voice. “About the safe deposit box? About the Italian tribunal?”

“It was true three hours ago,” Luca said smoothly, reaching out and gently taking both of my hands in his. “Vanessa thought she was very clever. She hid the documents in a private vault at the First National Bank of Chicago, registered under a fake corporate identity.”

“And Donati’s men?”

A cold, lethal smirk touched Luca’s lips—the old Don resurfacing for just a fraction of a second. “Donati sent four of his remaining mercenaries to retrieve the contents twenty minutes ago. The FBI was waiting inside the vault. Marco Donati himself was arrested in the getaway vehicle three blocks away.”

I let out a shaky breath, my knees weakening. “It’s over? Truly over?”

“It is over,” Luca confirmed softly, pulling me gently against his chest. “Donati has been charged with thirty-two federal counts of racketeering, attempted murder, and conspiracy. He will never see the light of day. And as for Charles and Vanessa…”

He paused, resting his chin against the top of my head.

“…their transport was rescheduled. They were moved to maximum security six hours ago without incident. They will never contact you, never see you, and never touch this family again.”

I buried my face in his neck, the intoxicating scent of cedar and warmth filling my senses. The terror that had haunted my every waking moment for three years—the fear of a knock on the door, the fear of corrupt judges, the fear of sudden violence—finally, irrevocably broke.

The trap had been sprung, not on us, but on the monsters who had hunted us.
