Chapter 4 - Shadows Over the Estate

The next morning broke over Chicago not with sunlight, but with a shroud of gray, suffocating mist rolling off Lake Michigan.

The Moretti estate had transformed overnight. The discreet luxury of manicured lawns and marble statues was now overshadowed by armed men in black tactical gear patrolling the high stone walls. Drones buzzed quietly through the low-hanging fog, and the heavy wrought-iron gates were sealed with electronic deadbolts.

Inside the private sunroom of the third floor, Lily sat at a small glass table, happily coloring in a picture book with brand-new crayons that Marco had procured at dawn. She was laughing, her face dusted with powdered sugar from the fresh pastries the private chef had prepared just for her.

I leaned against the doorframe, watching her. For the first time in three years, the knot of permanent terror in my stomach had loosened, but it had been replaced by a different kind of dread.

A shadow fell across the sunroom floor.

Luca walked in. He wore a crisp black shirt with the top two buttons undone, his dark hair slightly disheveled as if he hadn't slept a single second. In his hand, he carried a small, velvet-lined box.

Lily looked up from her coloring book, her hazel eyes widening. “Good morning, Mr. Luca.”

Luca stopped, a tiny, genuine smile tugging at the corner of his lips. “Good morning, Lily. Did you sleep well?”

She nodded vigorously. “The bed is as big as a boat! And Mommy didn't disappear when I woke up!”

The innocence of her words hit me like a physical blow. Luca’s eyes met mine for a brief, heavy second, acknowledging the unspoken pain, before he turned his attention back to my daughter.

He walked over to the table and knelt down beside her small chair. “I brought you something. A repair.”

He opened the velvet box.

Lily gasped. Resting inside was her old, headless plush rabbit—except now, the head was securely stitched back onto the body with neat, golden embroidery thread. Around its neck was a tiny silk collar with a silver bell.

“Barnaby!” Lily squealed, dropping her crayon and snatching the toy from the box, hugging it against her chest. “You fixed him!”

“My tailor is very skilled with needle and thread,” Luca said solemnly, though his eyes sparkled with amusement. “Barnaby told me he is ready for duty again.”

Lily giggled, throwing her small arms around Luca’s neck without an ounce of hesitation.

The mafia don froze. For three long seconds, Luca Moretti—a man who had never shown vulnerability in his life—remained completely motionless. Then, slowly, with an almost painful gentleness, his large arms wrapped around the little girl, returning the hug.

My hand flew to my mouth to stifle a sob.

Charles had been Lily’s biological father, yet in four years of marriage, he had never once held her like that. To Charles, Lily had been an accessory, an heir to show off at country club galas, a pawn to hurt me with. But Luca… Luca looked at her as if she were made of spun glass.

“Thank you,” Lily whispered, pulling back to inspect Barnaby’s new golden stitches.

“You’re very welcome,” Luca murmured. He stood up, smoothing his trousers, and nodded toward the hallway. “Hannah. A word, please.”

I stepped out of the sunroom into the wide corridor, closing the door halfway so Lily couldn't hear. “Luca, what’s happening? Did Donati move?”

“Donati is mobilizing,” Luca said, his casual warmth evaporating instantly into tactical steel. “Vanessa gave them the schematics to our underground tunnel network beneath the old stables. They think they can slip a strike team through the blind spots in our cameras tonight.”

My breath caught. “Why? Why would the Donatis risk an all-out war with you over Lily and Charles?”

“Because Charles Whitmore knows where forty million dollars of Donati cartel money was laundered through the Cayman Islands,” Luca explained coldly. “Charles was their offshore bagman before he married you. When you left him, his life spiraled, his firm collapsed, and he diverted ten million of their cash to cover his own debts. Vanessa knew this. She promised Donati that if he helps her wipe me out and recover Charles, Charles will hand over the encryption keys to that offshore account.”

“It’s all about money,” I whispered, disgusted. “My baby’s life… it was just leverage for their stolen millions.”

“To them, yes,” Luca said, stepping closer until his chest was inches from mine. “To me, it is about something entirely different.”

I looked up into his dark, piercing eyes. “What is it about to you, Luca?”

He reached out, his hand resting firmly against the wooden doorframe beside my head, effectively trapping me in his intoxicating orbit. “It is about keeping the only woman who ever looked at me without greed or fear completely safe. And ensuring her daughter never sheds another tear under my sky.”

My pulse raced violently. The intensity in his gaze made the air between us crackle with electric heat. “Luca… you barely know me. I was your maid.”

“You were never just a maid to me, Hannah,” he said, his voice dropping into a rough, intimate timber that sent shivers racing down my spine. “For eleven months, you walked through this house of ghosts like a beam of light. Every time you entered a room, the air became breathable. I endured Vanessa’s petty cruelty because my family’s syndicate demanded a strategic alliance. But the second she laid her hands on you… the second she demanded you kneel…”

Luca’s jaw clenched, his eyes blazing with dark fire.

“…I realized I would burn the entire city of Chicago to the ground before I allowed anyone to humiliate you again.”

Before I could answer, the shrill wail of the estate’s perimeter alarm tore through the air.

The lights in the corridor flickered and instantly plunged into blood-red emergency lighting. The blast shutters over the hallway windows slammed shut with the deafening thunder of falling steel.

From the sunroom, Lily screamed.
