Chapter 9 - Healing the Scars
The sunrise that broke over Long Island forty-eight hours later was unlike any morning the Moretti estate had seen in a decade. The storm had washed the sky into a brilliant, crystalline blue, and the morning light poured through the tall French doors of the sunroom, illuminating the polished wood of the grand Steinway piano.
The estate was quiet, but it was not the suffocating silence of a mausoleum anymore.
In the wake of the Plaza Gala and the events at Pier 42, the East Coast underworld had undergone an earthquake. Senator Marcus Vance was in federal custody, singing like a canary to avoid life in a supermax prison, taking down twenty corrupt city officials with him. The remaining capos of the five families, terrified by the ruthless precision with which Lucas had dismantled his own inner circle, had signed an unconditional peace treaty.
Lucas Moretti had kept his promise to Isabella.
He had officially announced the complete liquidation of the family's illicit rackets. The warehouses, the shipping lines, the waterfront properties—everything was being transferred into a legitimate multi-billion-dollar maritime logistics corporation and a private charitable trust dedicated to pediatric medicine and social welfare. The guns were put away. The blood money was washed clean.
In the grand sunroom, Lucas stood near the glass doors, dressed in a soft charcoal cashmere sweater and dark slacks. His right shoulder was immobilized in an orthopedic brace, but his face had regained its color, his gray-blue eyes clear and peaceful.
On the sofa across the room sat Lily, wearing a brand-new yellow sundress, happily swinging her legs while eating fresh strawberries from a silver bowl. Beside her, Dr. Rossi—now legally pardoned by Lucas and serving as the child’s full-time private pediatrician—was checking her clear, rhythmic breathing with a smile.
"Lungs are completely clear, Mr. Moretti," Dr. Rossi reported, packing away his stethoscope with genuine warmth. "The specialized preventive regimen is working wonders. She won't have to fear an attack like that ever again."
"Thank you, Rossi," Lucas said quietly. "Make sure the trust sets up the free clinic in Queens by the end of the month."
"Already in progress, sir." The doctor bowed respectfully and exited the room, leaving the sunroom bathed in morning warmth.
Elena walked in from the terrace, carrying two porcelain cups of coffee. She wore a simple cream-colored cardigan and linen trousers, her hair falling softly around her shoulders. She looked rested. The dark hollows beneath her eyes were gone, replaced by a radiant, calm beauty that made Lucas’s heart skip a beat every time she entered a room.
She handed him a cup, her fingers brushing against his. A warm, electric current passed between them—a silent language forged through fire, grief, and salvation.
"The lawyers just left," Elena said softly, looking out at the sprawling emerald gardens where the estate’s security guards had been replaced by landscape crews planting white roses. "The paperwork is finalized. Lily is legally enrolled in the private academy in Manhattan. And... my new identity documents are ready."
Lucas looked down into his coffee, his jaw tightening slightly. "You have a passport in your real name now, Elena. Bank accounts in Zurich and Boston with enough wealth to ensure you and Lily never have to work another day in your lives. If... if you want to leave this house. If you want to put this entire nightmare behind you."
Elena didn't answer immediately. She walked over to the grand piano—the Steinway that had sat silent beneath a dust sheet for three years. She gently ran her fingertips over the polished black lacquer.
"Isabella loved you so much, Lucas," Elena whispered. "She told me once that your heart was the most dangerous place in the world, not because you were cruel, but because once you loved someone, you would tear down the sky to keep them safe."
She turned around, leaning her back against the piano, meeting his gaze with unyielding tenderness.
"For three years, I thought I was living in her shadow," Elena continued, her voice trembling slightly. "I thought bringing Lily here was just a desperate act to survive. But these last few days... watching you hold my daughter, watching you protect us... I realized something."
Lucas took a step toward her, his breath catching in his throat. "What did you realize, Elena?"
"Isabella didn't send me here to hide," Elena said, tears shining like diamonds in her hazel eyes, but her lips curving into a breathtaking smile. "She sent Lily and me here to bring you back to life."
Lucas closed the distance between them. He reached out with his uninjured left hand, his long fingers gently cupping the side of her neck, his thumb tracing the soft curve of her jawline.
For the first time since the night the sky fell three years ago, Lucas Moretti did not feel like a ghost walking among the living. He felt the steady, powerful rhythm of his own heart, beating in time with the woman standing before him.
"I don't want you to leave, Elena," Lucas whispered, his rough voice thick with raw, honest emotion. "I don't want to live in this house without you. I don't want to see a single sunrise if you and Lily aren't here to share it with me."
Elena let out a soft, shuddering breath, stepping into his space, resting her forehead gently against his broad chest. "Then we stay," she whispered into his sweater. "We stay right here. Together."
From across the room, a tiny voice chimed in.
"Mommy? Does this mean Lucas is my daddy now?"
Elena gasped, laughing through her tears as she looked over her shoulder. Lily was watching them with wide, hopeful eyes, a half-eaten strawberry clutched in her small fingers.
Lucas smiled—a wide, bright, boyish grin that transformed his aristocratic, battle-hardened face entirely. He held out his good arm.
"Come here, little strawberry," Lucas called out.
May you like
Lily squealed with delight, jumping off the sofa and sprinting across the oriental rug, launching herself straight into Lucas’s waiting arm. He scooped her up, pressing his face into her hair, breathing in the scent of sweet strawberries, baby shampoo, and life.
