Chapter 5 - Elena's Truth
Lucas walked to the hidden bookshelf, tapped a concealed lever behind a leather-bound volume of Dante’s *Inferno*, and the heavy mahogany door swung open.
Elena stood inside the darkened bedchamber, clutching a heavy brass candlestick like a weapon, her body positioned defensively in front of the bed where Lily had finally collapsed into an exhausted sleep, clutching a velvet pillow.
Seeing Lucas enter alone, the tension in Elena’s shoulders snapped. The brass candlestick slipped from her fingers, clattering onto the thick rug. She sagged against the wall, covering her mouth to stifle a sob of relief.
"He was here," Elena whispered, her eyes wide with terror. "I heard his voice through the paneling. God, Lucas... he sounds so normal. So loyal. It makes me sick to my stomach."
"He poisoned my inhaler," Lucas said, showing her the warped canister. "He intended for me to die tonight. With me gone, the council of capos would have named him regent until a successor was chosen. He would have inherited the entire Moretti syndicate without firing a single bullet."
Elena looked at the canister, horror etching deep lines into her young face. "He’s a monster. Isabella knew it. That’s why he couldn't let her live."
Lucas stepped into the room and closed the concealed door behind him, locking the internal deadbolt. He walked to the edge of the king-sized bed and looked down at Lily. The little girl’s breathing was soft and rhythmic now, her small chest rising and falling beneath the faded strawberry pajamas. In her sleep, her tiny fingers were still hooked into the fabric of her mother’s discarded cleaning apron.
"She saved my life," Lucas murmured, the hardness in his voice cracking. "A child who has every reason to fear this house. Why did you name her Lily?"
Elena stepped up beside him, her hazel eyes softening as she looked at her daughter. A bittersweet, fragile smile touched her lips. "Isabella chose the name. When I found out I was pregnant—abandoned by a man who vanished the moment the test turned positive—I had nothing. No job, no money, no hope. Bella took me into her home. She paid for my prenatal care. She said, 'Lillies grow in the mud, Elena. They are pure, stubborn, and they survive the darkest waters.' When Lily was born, Bella was the first person to hold her."
Lucas felt a lump form in his throat that felt like lead. For three years, he had lived in an emotional wasteland, convinced that all light and decency had been incinerated on that New Jersey turnpike. He had become an engine of violence, a phantom commanding an empire of shadows.
Yet here, standing in his private quarters, were two living pieces of Isabella’s heart. Two souls his dead wife had loved and protected with her final breath.
"Where is the key Isabella left you?" Lucas asked, turning his gaze to Elena.
Elena reached up to her hair. With steady, practiced fingers, she pulled a small silver hairpin from her bun. She twisted the decorative head of the pin until it clicked, sliding out a microscopic micro-SD card hidden within the metal shaft.
"She told me that if I ever gave this to you, I had to make sure you were ready," Elena whispered, holding the tiny black chip between two trembling fingers. "Because it doesn't just name Victor Romano, Lucas."
Lucas frowned, his instincts instantly flaring with warning. "What do you mean?"
Elena took a shaky breath. "Victor didn't act alone. He couldn't have executed a strike of that magnitude, bypassed the federal port authorities, and silenced the state police without backing from the highest levels of the city."
"Who?" Lucas demanded, his voice dropping into a dangerous, icy growl.
"Senator Marcus Vance," Elena stated.
The name hit Lucas like a physical blow.
Marcus Vance was the leading candidate for governor of New York. A man who built his political platform on "cleaning up organized crime," while quietly taking hundreds of thousands of dollars in campaign contributions laundered through Moretti-owned construction companies. Vance was an ally Lucas’s own father had cultivated for twenty years.
"Vance wanted the waterfront redevelopment project," Elena explained, her voice gaining strength as the full truth spilled out. "Three billion dollars in federal infrastructure grants. But your father’s old treaties barred commercial developers from touching the Brooklyn terminals. Victor promised Vance full access to the docks in exchange for absolute federal immunity and the political leverage to seize your empire once you were out of the way. Isabella discovered the signed contracts in Victor’s private safe."
Lucas stared at the tiny micro-chip. The puzzle pieces, scattered across three years of grief and bloodshed, clicked together with horrifying precision.
The Jersey fire hadn't just been a distraction. It had been an excuse for federal agents under Vance’s jurisdiction to seize the terminal records. The state police who botched the accident investigation were hand-picked by Vance’s task force. The entire tragedy had been a cold, corporate, and political takeover disguised as a mob feud.
"They killed my family for real estate," Lucas whispered. The words were quiet, but they carried the apocalyptic weight of a mountain collapsing into the sea.
"Lucas..." Elena reached out, her hand hesitating mid-air before she gently placed her fingers on his arm. Her touch was warm, human, grounding him against the vortex of murderous rage threatening to swallow his mind. "We can't just attack them. Vance has the FBI, the state troopers, and half the city’s tactical units in his pocket. Victor has half your own men. If you move openly, they will brand you a terrorist, raid this estate, and slaughter everyone inside."
Lucas looked down at Elena’s hand on his sleeve. He saw the bruises on her wrists from the guards who had dragged her in. He saw the exhaustion etched around her hazel eyes, the years of terror and hiding she had endured to protect a child and a secret.
"I am not going to move openly," Lucas said, his eyes glittering with a cold, terrifying brilliance. "Victor thinks I am dying in my bed from an asthma attack. He thinks he has until tomorrow morning to consolidate his power before he announces my incapacitation to the capos. Tomorrow night is the annual St. Jude Charity Gala at the Plaza Hotel. Vance is the guest of honor. Victor is scheduled to deliver our family’s annual donation."
A slow, feral smile curved Lucas’s lips—the smile of a wolf that had just seen the hunter step into his own bear trap.

"We are going to give them their donation, Elena," Lucas murmured. "And I am going to make them pay for every single tear you and my wife ever shed."
