Chapter 7 - Shadows in the Sunlight
The quiet that settled over the Moretti estate in the days following the breakfast felt almost sacred. For the first time in years, the grand mansion on the outskirts of Chicago breathed without the stifling tension of deceit. Teresa walked through the sunlit corridors with a steady, renewed grace, her new hearing aids catching every whisper of wind through the weeping willows and every soft rustle of the garden leaves.
Yet, beneath that newfound serenity, the underworld did not sleep.
I stood by the French doors of Teresa’s private parlor, watching the perimeter guards rotate their shifts. Their numbers had doubled. Men in sharp charcoal suits, with concealed sidearms and earpieces, walked the stone paths with rigid vigilance. The unceremonious ejection of Gia Vance—Luca’s disgraced former fiancée—had sent shockwaves through the Syndicate. The Vance family held deep roots in city politics and maritime shipping. They would not swallow such humiliation quietly.
"You look at them as if you expect an army to come over the wall, Emily," Teresa said softly from her velvet armchair, knitting needles clicking in a steady, soothing rhythm.
I turned with a small, apologetic smile. "Occupational habit, Teresa. In hospice and acute care, you’re always anticipating the sudden downturn. In this house, I imagine the downturns carry heavier calibers."
Teresa chuckles, setting her yarn aside. "My late husband, Antonio, used to say that peace is merely the brief intermission between two wars. But Luca... Luca is different. He fights only to protect what is his. When he removed Gia, he didn't just break an engagement; he severed a cancer. Now, the body politic will run a fever."
Before I could answer, the double oak doors swung open. Luca stepped into the room, impeccably dressed in a tailored midnight-blue suit, his slate-gray eyes scanning the parlor before softening as they rested on his mother—and then lingering on me.
"Good afternoon, ladies," Luca said, his deep baritone grounding the room. He walked over to kiss his mother’s forehead, then turned to face me. "Emily. You look tired. Have you taken a break today?"
"I’m completely fine, Mr. Moretti," I replied, smoothing down my tailored navy dress. "Your mother and I had a lovely morning in the conservatory."
"Call him Luca, child," Teresa scolded gently, her eyes dancing with quiet amusement. "He isn't your landlord or your warden. He's the boy whose life you saved by opening his eyes."
Luca’s lips twitched with the ghost of a smile. "Listen to her, Emily. Or she’ll have me rewrite your contract again." He pulled a leather portfolio from under his arm and set it on the side table. "I came to inform you both that I’ll be downtown at the Union League Club tonight. The Five Families are convening an emergency council."
Teresa’s hands stilled on her lap. The playful warmth vanished, replaced by the steely gaze of a woman who had survived decades at the apex of the mafia. "Old Man Vance called it?"
"Yes," Luca replied calmly. "He claims breach of honor. He wants compensation for his daughter’s broken reputation."
"Honor?" Teresa scoffed bitterly. "That girl drugged my tea, stole my ledgers, and whispered venom while pretending I was a deaf ghost. If Vance wants compensation, send him a bill for every tear I swallowed."
"He won't get a cent, Ma," Luca said with absolute finality. His jaw hardened, the lethal boss re-emerging from beneath the filial son. "He will get a reminder of why the Moretti crest flies above the rest. But while I am in the city, security here will be locked down. Emily, Marco will remain at your door. If anything feels wrong—even a flicker of a shadow—you take my mother to the vault."
"Understood," I said without hesitation.
Luca took a step toward me, closing the distance until the subtle scent of cedar and expensive cologne enveloped my senses. His gray eyes held an intensity that made my pulse jump. "I trust you with her life, Emily. And that means I trust you with mine."
