Chapter 11 - Under the Crystal Chandelier

The Grand Ballroom of the Drake Hotel was a swirling sea of black ties, diamond necklaces, champagne flutes, and lethal power.

When the brass double doors opened and the butler announced, *"Mr. Luca Moretti, Mrs. Teresa Moretti, and Miss Emily Bennett,"* the deafening hum of conversation died within seconds.

A collective intake of breath swept through the room.

Teresa walked in with her head held high, resplendent in silver brocade, radiating the poise of an empress who had buried her enemies and lived to tell the tale. Beside her walked Luca, commanding the room with effortless, predatory authority.

And on Luca’s arm, I walked, matching their stride, my chin up, my gaze steady despite the hundreds of eyes boring into us.

Whispers erupted like wildfire.

*"Who is she?"*

*"Is that the girl who replaced Gia?"*

*"Look at Teresa... I thought she was senile and deaf!"*

*"She isn't deaf at all. Look at her eyes—she hears everything."*

Several old capos and high-society patrons parted immediately, bowing their heads with profound respect as Luca led us toward the central VIP table.

Before we could reach it, however, a shrill, hysterical voice cut through the polite murmur.

"How dare you bring that servant in here?!"

Gia Vance emerged from a cluster of terrified socialites, her face pale, her designer gown slightly disheveled, her eyes bloodshot and rimmed with mascara. Beside her stood three armed bodyguards, their hands hovering nervously near their jackets.

The entire ballroom froze. The string quartet stopped playing.

"You murdered my father last night, Luca!" Gia shrieked, pointing a trembling, manicured finger at him. "You slaughter my family, and then you show up here with your mother’s little charity maid on your arm? Have you lost your mind?!"

The guards around the room tensed, ready for violence.

Luca didn't flinch. He didn't even reach for a weapon. He merely stepped slightly in front of me, his voice dropping into a deadly, subterranean calm that chilled the air in the room.

"Gia," Luca said softly. "You are alive only because I do not execute women. But if you take one more step toward Emily, or toward my mother, I will make an exception for your brother Julian’s entire bloodline."

"She’s a nobody!" Gia screamed, tears of rage spilling down her cheeks. "She washed your mother’s feet for minimum wage! She is nothing compared to me!"

Suddenly, Teresa stepped forward.

The elderly matriarch raised her hand, and the sheer authority radiating from her posture made Gia stumble back a step.

"Emily Bennett washed my feet with love," Teresa said, her voice carrying through the silent hall with crystal clarity. "She held my hand when you locked me in a dark room. She brought me my dignity, while you plotted to put me in an early grave for my husband's inheritance. Emily is a hundred times the woman you could ever dream of being."

Teresa turned her head toward the surrounding crowd. "Any man or woman in this room who disrespects Miss Bennett disrespects the Moretti name. And anyone who disrespects my family will answer to my son."

A profound silence smothered the hall.

Gia looked around desperately for support, but every ally she thought she had looked down at their shoes. She had become toxic. Poisonous.

With a sob of pure humiliation, Gia turned and fled through the service exit, her bodyguards scrambling behind her.

Luca turned his head toward the bandleader. "Play," he commanded.

The music resumed instantly, though the balance of power in Chicago had permanently shifted.
