Chapter 4 - The Shattered Stage

The room froze into absolute, suffocating silence.

The playback continued, filling the room with the recorded conversation Abigail had captured outside the door four hours earlier:

“When I get out of here, I’ll tell her I need money to save the shop. She’ll pay the rent, buy me another printer, and clear my credit cards. She always fixes everything... Everything eventually becomes about me.”

Abigail pressed the stop button.

The click echoed off the marble walls like a gunshot.

Spencer’s face went from pale to a terrifying, sickly grey. His jaw dropped open. He sat up straight in the bed, forgetting every trace of his fake illness, his eyes bulging as he stared at his mother.

"Mom..." Spencer stammered, his voice cracking. "Mom, wait... that... that wasn't what it sounded like! I was... I was just joking with a friend! I was under medication!"

Dr. Croft’s professional mask completely dissolved. His eyes flicked frantically toward the door, then toward Amber, who had dropped the gold pen onto the floor.

"Mrs. Riley," Dr. Croft tried to step between Abigail and the door, his voice tight with sudden panic. "This is a private medical facility. You cannot record conversations without—"

"Shut your mouth, Doctor," Abigail said.

Her voice wasn't loud. It wasn't angry. It was a cold, absolute command that made Dr. Croft freeze mid-sentence.

Abigail turned her gaze back to her son.

"Eight months, Spencer," Abigail said softly, her dark eyes locking onto his. "Eight months I spent weeping in my kitchen at two in the morning, praying to God to take my life instead of yours."

"Mom, please!" Spencer threw off the hospital bedsheets, stepping out onto the floor in his street clothes, taking a desperate step toward her. "Listen to me! I was scared! The printing shop was going under! The bank was going to take everything!"

"I sold your father's watch, Spencer," Abigail continued, her voice unshakeable, laying down each word like a stone on a grave. "I pawned my mother's sewing machine. I asked our neighbors for loans—people who earn minimum wage, Spencer! They gave me their grocery money because they thought my boy was dying!"

"I’ll pay them back!" Spencer yelled, tears of panic finally erupting from his eyes as he reached out to grab her coat. "I’ll pay every single dollar back! Just claim the ticket, Mom! We can fix this! We're family!"

Abigail took one deliberate step backward, avoiding his touch as if he were a stranger carrying a disease.

"We were family, Spencer," Abigail whispered. "Until you decided my love was a bank account without a password."

The heavy wooden door of Room 12 was thrown open.

Naomi Vance walked inside, flanked by four officers from the Illinois State Police Financial Crimes Division and two senior representatives from the State Attorney General's Office.

"Julian Croft, Spencer Riley, and Amber Croft," the lead detective announced, pulling heavy steel handcuffs from his belt. "You are under arrest for grand larceny, medical insurance fraud, wire fraud, and criminal conspiracy."

"No! Wait!" Dr. Croft shrieked, backing toward the window as two officers grabbed his arms, forcing them behind his back. "I was just providing consulting services! Spencer forged those documents!"

"He's lying! Croft set up the offshore accounts!" Spencer screamed, struggling wildly as an officer forced him down onto the bed, snapping the steel cuffs around his wrists. "Mom! Tell them to stop! Mom! Tell them it's a mistake! I’m your son!"

Abigail stood motionless in the center of the room.

She watched the officers drag Dr. Croft and Amber out into the hallway.

Then, she looked into the eyes of her thirty-four-year-old son as he was pulled past her toward the door.

"Mom!" Spencer sobbed, his face contorted in sheer, terrifying ruin. "You can't do this to me! You're my mother!"

Abigail looked at him with deep, quiet sorrow.

"A mother protects her child, Spencer," Abigail said softly. "And today, I am protecting you from becoming any worse than you already are."

She turned her back on him as the officers led him down the hallway in chains, his hysterical screams echoing through the hospital corridor until the elevator doors closed.
