Chapter 6 - THE ACCOMPLICE UNMASKED

"Get off me! Claire, you bitch! You planned this!" Vanessa screamed, her face pressed against the parquet floor as the second cuff clicked shut. "I hope you burn in hell! I hope Daniel leaves you like everyone else does!"

"Keep your head down, ma'am," the officer said, wrenching her arms up behind her back with mechanical efficiency.

Detective Miller didn't look at Vanessa. She walked toward Table 3.

Table 3 was the corporate table—mostly Daniel’s junior partners and several venture capital associates who had backed Carter Design Group during our restructuring.

Sitting near the end of the table was a man named Julian Mercer.

Julian was Carter Design Group’s chief financial controller. He was also the man who had supposedly 'discovered' the discrepancies in Dad’s trust accounts two years ago and advised me to keep it out of the courts to 'avoid hurting the company’s valuation.'

As Detective Miller approached Table 3, Julian was already on his feet, reaching for his coat draped over the back of his chair.

"Julian Mercer?" Miller said, holding up her badge.

Julian went rigid. His hand froze on his lapel. "Detective. I have nothing to do with this. I’m just an employee."

Arthur Hale, who had now reached the center aisle, pulled a manila folder from his leather briefcase and adjusted his glasses.

"Mr. Mercer," Hale announced, his voice carrying clearly to every guest in the room. "Perhaps you’d like to explain to the Detective why 15% of every fraudulent withdrawal executed from the Carter Design Group payroll reserve was routed through a Cayman-registered LLC named *Veritas Holdings*—an entity whose sole beneficial owner is your domestic partner?"

Julian’s face went from pale to gray.

He looked at Vanessa, who was being hauled to her feet by the two patrol officers, and then at Daniel.

"She told me Claire would never audit it," Julian stammered, his polished corporate demeanor shattering in seconds. "She swore Claire was too terrified of family conflict to ever look at the offshore ledgers! She said Claire would just write it off as a business loss!"

"You had a fiduciary duty to my firm, Julian," I said from the head table. "And you traded it for two hundred thousand dollars and a promised vice presidency when Vanessa took over."

Detective Miller nodded to a third officer waiting near the doorway. "Julian Mercer, you’re being detained on charges of conspiracy to commit grand larceny, wire fraud, and falsification of business records."

The guests were completely frozen in shock.

This wasn't just wedding drama anymore. It was the public dismantling of a two-year criminal enterprise that had eaten away at my father’s life work from the inside out.

Vanessa was thrashing against the officers’ grip as they marched her toward the main center aisle. Her hair was a wild, tangled mess; her emerald gown was torn at the shoulder from her fall; her mascara ran in thick, black tracks down her cheeks.

As the officers pulled her past the head table, she lunged toward the platform.

"Claire! Look at me! Look at what you’re doing to your own sister!" she wailed, her voice cracking with wild, unhinged fury. "Tell them to let me go! I’m your sister! You can’t do this to me!"

The officers held her back effortlessly.

I stood up from my chair.

The Delacroix gown fell around me in lines of sharp, unbreakable silver. I walked to the edge of the stage, looking down at her from five feet above.

"You poured glue on my dress, Vanessa," I said, my voice so quiet that the entire two-hundred-person room held its breath to hear it. "You thought you were destroying my wedding. But all you did was open the vault."

She stared at me, her chest heaving, the realization finally breaking through the madness: I was never going to save her again.

"Get her out of my sight," Daniel ordered the officers.

The doors opened.

Vanessa Carter was dragged out into the rainy evening, her screams echoing down the marble halls until the heavy doors swung shut, cutting off the noise forever.
