Chapter 5 - THE MOTHER'S COLLAPSE

The sound of the polished leather soles marching across the hardwood floor was the only sound in the cavernous room.

Mom stumbled out from Table 1, her diamond bracelets clattering against each other as she threw herself between the officers and Table 4. "Wait! Please! Stop this! Officer, this is a misunderstanding! It’s a private family dispute! We can settle this!"

Detective Miller didn't even slow down. She deftly stepped around my mother with the practiced ease of someone who had navigated a thousand weeping parents.

"Mrs. Carter, step aside," Miller said, her voice dry and authoritative. "We have an active warrant signed by Judge Holbrook an hour ago. We are here to execute an arrest."

"Claire!" Mom shrieked, spinning toward the head table. She dropped to her knees on the edge of the dais, grabbing the heavy satin hem of my dress. "Claire, tell them! Tell them you don't want to press charges! If she goes to prison, her life is over! She’s your sister! Your own blood!"

I looked down at my mother.

For thirty years, this was the posture she had demanded of me: *sacrifice your happiness, sacrifice your sanity, sacrifice your money, to keep Vanessa whole.* Every time Vanessa broke something of mine, Mom told me to be the bigger person. Every time Vanessa slandered me, Mom told me to turn the other cheek to keep peace in the home.

I reached down and gently, firmly, peeled my mother’s fingers off my dress.

"Her life isn't over, Mom," I said, looking directly into her red-rimmed eyes. "Her life of living off my sweat and Dad’s grave is over. There’s a difference."

"You monster," Mom sobbed, collapsing onto the floor. "You planned this! On your wedding day! You staged this entire day just to destroy her!"

"No," Daniel intervened, his voice cutting through the hall like a winter wind. "Claire planned a wedding. She planned to wear a beautiful gown, celebrate with her friends, and start a life with me. Your other daughter brought criminal sabotage and fifteen months of felony fraud into this room. Claire didn't destroy Vanessa. Vanessa simply ran out of people to rob."

At Table 4, the two uniformed officers closed in.

"Vanessa Carter?" the taller officer asked, his hand resting near his duty belt.

Vanessa backed away from her chair until her thighs hit the linen-draped table, sending water glasses rattling. Her face was drenched in cold sweat, her emerald gown suddenly looking like a clown suit.

"Don't touch me," she hissed, baring her teeth. "Do you know who I am? Do you know who my family is?"

"Yes, ma'am," the officer replied calmly. "You’re the subject of an arrest warrant for Grand Larceny, Forgery, and Criminal Mischief exceeding $50,000. Put your hands behind your back."

"No!" she shrieked.

She turned and made a desperate, clumsy break for the service corridor behind the catering stations.

She took three running steps.

Mark Sanders didn't even have to move. One of the private security guards Daniel had hired stepped smoothly into the service aisle, blocking the exit like an oak door. Vanessa collided with his chest, bounced backward, and lost her footing on the slick hardwood floor.

She hit the ground hard, her clutch flying open, scattering cosmetics, breath mints, and an extra set of car keys across the floor.

Before she could push herself up, the two officers were on her.
