Chapter 6 - The Safehouse

The Maybach tore through the storm-drenched streets of Chicago at breakneck speed, its tires screaming as Adrian navigated the sleek vehicle through back alleys and industrial districts.

Sophie sat in the passenger seat, trembling violently, her clothes splattered with dirt and blood that wasn't hers. She stared at her hands, unable to stop the shaking.

"Are you hit?" Adrian asked, his voice sharp with anxiety as he glanced at her while taking a hard left turn. "Sophie, look at me! Are you hurt?"

"I... I don't think so," she stammered, her voice barely a whisper. "Adrian... you killed those men."

"They came to kill you," Adrian said coldly. "I did what was necessary."

"Who are these people?!" she demanded, tears finally streaming down her face. "What kind of world did you pull me into?!"

"The real world, Sophie," Adrian said grimly. "The world where men like Moretti take whatever they want unless someone puts a bullet in them first. I tried to keep you separate from it. I failed. But I will not let him touch you again."

Twenty minutes later, the Maybach pulled into the hidden underground garage of a sprawling estate miles outside the city limits. Surrounded by high stone walls, security cameras, and razor wire, the compound looked like a fortress.

Adrian escorted Sophie inside the house. It was grand but austere, decorated in dark woods and cold stone. He led her to a large bedroom on the second floor and immediately went to a cabinet, pulling out a medical kit and a glass of brandy.

"Drink this," he commanded, handing her the glass.

Sophie took a small sip, the burning liquid searing her throat, but it helped settle the trembling in her stomach.

Adrian sat on the edge of the bed in front of her. He took her hands in his. His palms were warm, strong, and surprisingly gentle for a man who had just taken human lives.

"You were brave back there," Adrian said softly, looking into her eyes. "Most people freeze. You hit a six-foot-two mercenary with a bronze bust."

A weak, shaky smile broke through Sophie’s tear-stained face. "I was terrified."

"Fear keeps you alive," Adrian replied. "I need you to stay here tonight. My men are securing the perimeter. Moretti doesn't know about this location."

Sophie looked at him, her heart pounding in a completely different way now. The raw power and lethal danger of the night had stripped away all the corporate masks. Standing before her was the real Adrian Vale—a man who lived in darkness, yet fought fiercely to keep her in the light.

"Adrian," she whispered, leaning closer to him. "Why did you come for me at Bell & Finch? It wasn't just corporate strategy, was it? Nobody does all of this for an assistant."

Adrian closed his eyes for a second, fighting an internal war. He wanted to tell her everything. He wanted to tell her about Victor Ellis, about his debt, about how watching her stand up for an old woman had cracked open a heart he thought had turned to stone years ago.

"I came to the restaurant because I was cold," Adrian said softly, his dark eyes opening to meet hers. "And when I saw you... I saw someone who still had warmth in a world that burns everything down. I couldn't let him ruin you."

Sophie reached up, her fingers gently brushing the sharp contour of his jawline. "You're not as cold as you pretend to be."

May you like

Adrian held her gaze, his breath catching. For a terrifying, beautiful moment, the distance between them vanished. Leaning in, Adrian pressed his lips to hers in a tender, fierce kiss that tasted of rain, danger, and unspoken promises.

When he pulled back, his eyes were dark with emotion. "Get some sleep, Sophie. Tomorrow, this ends."
