Chapter 3 - An Unholy Alliance

The interior of Adrian’s Maybach was silent, wrapped in dark leather and the faint scent of expensive cologne. Sophie sat as far from Adrian as possible, her eyes fixed on the tinted window as the city lights blurred past.

"Where are you taking me?" she demanded.

"To my office," Adrian replied, reviewing documents on an iPad. "We have business to discuss."

"I don't have business with you. I don't even know what you do."

"I run Vale Enterprises," Adrian said simply. "Real estate, logistics, hospitality. And other ventures."

"Other ventures," Sophie repeated, her tone dripping with skepticism. "That's a polite word for organized crime, isn't it? I read the news, Mr. Vale. I know who you are. People say you own half the police force and every dark alley in Chicago."

Adrian laid his tablet down and looked at her. "People say many things. Most of them are true. But tonight, I am offering you an honest proposition."

The car pulled up to a towering glass skyscraper in the heart of the financial district. They took a private elevator straight to the penthouse floor. Adrian’s office was sprawling, floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the glowing Chicago skyline.

Adrian walked behind his massive mahogany desk and opened a drawer, pulling out a thick manila folder. He slid it across the glass surface toward Sophie.

"What's this?" she asked without touching it.

"A contract," Adrian said. "I am hiring you as my personal administrative assistant. Your starting salary will be one hundred and fifty thousand dollars a year. Full medical coverage, including specialized private care for your mother. Oakridge’s fees will be paid in full tomorrow morning, six months in advance."

Sophie stared at him, stunned into silence. She swallowed hard, searching his face for the catch. "Why? You don't know me. You saw me for ten minutes in a restaurant where I got fired. Nobody gives away money like this without expecting something in return. What do you want from me?"

Adrian leaned back in his leather chair, crossing his hands. "I need someone in my office who cannot be bought. Everyone who works for me is either afraid of me or wants something from me. You, Miss Carter, proved today that you care more about doing what is right than about saving your own skin. That makes you dangerous—but it also makes you completely honest."

"That's a lie," Sophie said bluntly. "A man like you doesn't hire people because they have a moral compass. What's the real reason?"

Adrian’s eyes narrowed slightly. She was sharper than he gave her credit for.

"The real reason," Adrian lied effortlessly, keeping the secret of Evelyn Ellis locked away in his mind, "is that I am currently involved in a delicate corporate takeover. My enemies are watching my every move. They expect me to surround myself with armed guards and corrupt lawyers. Bringing in an innocent, incorruptible woman as my primary aide confuses them. It creates a shield."

Sophie looked down at the folder. One hundred and fifty thousand dollars. It was a lifeline thrown into a raging sea. It meant safety for her mother. It meant medical treatments, specialized therapies, peace of mind.

"If I sign this," Sophie said, her voice shaking slightly, "I work for you. But I won't do anything illegal. I won't lie for you under oath, and I won't hide bodies."

A rare, genuine smile tugged at the corner of Adrian’s lips. "Deal. No body-hiding required."

Sophie picked up the pen resting on the desk. She hesitated for a second, feeling as though she were signing a contract with the devil himself. But then she pictured her mother’s smile and the crayon drawing of the yellow house.

She pressed the pen to the paper and signed her name.
